Those dark dune spots represent the best chance of finding microbial life on Mars, actually. The seasonal pattern they follow can't be attributed to any non-organic means, the way they begin underneath the ice in the Martian spring and then spread until they reach the surface, then recede as the Martian winter approaches.

I have a whole paper on it written by a bunch of Hungarian scientists that's pretty interesting if anyone cares. I can email it if somebody wants it.
