How far can you get back?

Post by cowtime »

I was doing some geneology research tonight and decided to see how far I could get back-

This was from a Buchanan ancestor that changed from Buchanan to McCausland and from that to O'Kyan ,then O'Caithan to Caithan, Dungan,Gruagan, Concobobhar and then good ole Fargallus.

Dispensation, , , Scotland

And eyes as gray as icicle fangs measure stranger
For size, honesty, and intent."

Ummm.....not very far.

My (adopted) father has traced his family back to Ireland mid 1800's. Unfortunately they've gotten lost in all the Walshes there. My cousin has said he's going to go over there and do some serious research and maybe we'll be able to go back a little farther.

My mother's side of the family, I can go back to my great-grands, but the rest are lost in the mists of Lithuania and Poland. Names have been changed so much it's really hard to trace.

My biological dad is somewhat the same story, though I don't think anybody's tried too hard, maybe we'd have a little more luck (in his case it's Poland and Germany that the ancestors are lost in).

When I tried to trace my family tree, I did manage to find it, a big oak in Southern Arkansas. Several ropes were still hanging from the branches...

Well it depends on which line we are talking about. On my fathers side I can go back to Kent in the 1400s. On my mothers side I go back to Germany in the 1500s. For my wife I can go back to about 1210 in Cornwall. My Irish side is about 1830 in Cork and also in Limerick. The fun is in the search.

I've been able to trace my roots only as far back as my great-great-(?)great grandfather on my mother's side. At one time during the raj, he was director of the governor's band in India. I have a photo of him from an earlier time in his life looking very distinguished with his flowing beard, turban, and embroidered chogha, astride his beautiful Marwari horse.

I have no Irish ancestors, although when I was four years old, I insisted I was from Ireland (I must have seen a movie I liked set in Ireland), and wanted to go "home." My feeling of familiarity with Ireland, and longing to "return" there gradually diminished, and all but disappeared by the time I was ten, but I've remained interested in everything Irish, including the music. I've never been to Ireland, but I'd love to visit there.
