great person gravely ill
I think this is the first OT thread I've started. I found out earlier today that a colleague is gravely ill with a flesh-eating bacterial infection. This is someone I've only met a couple of times, but he works closely with other people I'm close to. He's a hoot to be around, very energetic, and literally one of the great scientists of my generation. A young guy with at least one young child.
I've even quoted him in my .sig now and then: "If I see less far than others, it is because giants stand on my shoulders."
I've lost two close friends to wasting diseases, and always thought there's no way to "prepare" for the passing of a loved one. But, despite not being tight with this guy, this is just devastating. I'm just not the same since I got the news.
So, pray, send good vibes, or whatever. I'm going to be traveling for a generous week, probably out of 'net contact, but I'll appreciate each and every good thought and prayer.
