Aside from a wood chipper, what would be useful?

Could be worse. Could be a viola.

A claw hammer, for its poetic justice. And the visceral satisfaction.

I've heard it said that violas really aren't larger, but that those who play them just have smaller heads.

Since violists are the current object of derision, here's two viola jokes told to me by two well known orchestral conductors (not saying who, but you'd likely recognize the names):
1 - What's the difference between a viola and a coffin? With the coffin, the dead person is inside...

2 - So young, and already a violist.

I've performed in small and large ensembles with some fantastic violists, and I can tell you if the sound is bad, it ain't the instrument, it's the driver.

Frank Zappa said that many rock bass players
are failed guitarists. It just might be the analog
in the bowed world, although a violinist who
plays viola usually can get more gigs.

Ah viola jokes. I do like them. Here's two of my favourites:

1 How do you know when the people outside the door are viola players? They can't find the key and they don't know where to come in.

... and my favourite of all:

2 What's the best make of viola mute? Smith and Wesson.

I know an ITM banjoist who likes to sit next to accordionists, with this rationale: "It makes the banjo sound almost delicate."

My favorite viola joke is:

Why is a viola called 'bratsche' in German?
Because that's the sound it makes when you sit on it.

(Yes, I double on viola.)
