Who is the Wagner of Rock?

Post by Wombat »

Are there any depths to which rock would never sink? Perhaps ...... but striving for Wagnerian bombast sure ain't one of them. Who does the best (worst?) job of it? Here is my shortlist of contenders:

Meatloaf
Pete Townshend
Rammstein
Queen
AC/DC
Phil Spector

As befits the topic, the list is kinda long and I' suspect you'll make it even longer.

Queen was trying the hardest, but lacked just a hair of the requisite hysterical teutonics.

And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

OMG! You left out King Crimsom and Robert Fripp! Oh! I have a pain in my left arm! I still prefer Herbert Von Karajan though.

I don't know what you mean by "Wagner of Rock" but I do know that Pink Floyd is the be all, end all of Rock, so I guess that would include "Wagner of Rock".

Close the thread.

We don't need any Wagners of rock, or any Wagner at all come to think of it. Neither Wagner nor Karajan is knowingly allowed to besmirch any loudspeaker in my house. I've never understood what Barenboim thinks he's up to, playing Wagner in the Middle East. :boggle:

What's the beef against Wagner himself? Yes, one of his kids was a Nazi, and yes, Nazis liked his music, but what's known about his relationship with aryanism?

Perhaps not, but we are stuck with them. As for the aesthetic, I'd bet that if it hadn't been Wagner it would have been someone else. There is something sort of inevitable about it.

Stuck with him in the sense thst many a composer was unduly influenced by him. I have no difficulty in excluding his over-loud, self-regarding and egotistical music from my house. He was rabidly antisemitic and he made some very offensive remarks about Felix Mendelssohn, a Jew, becauuse of his Jewishness. He would have been Hitler's best sidekick.

That'll do. Thanks.

The most recent culprits are Muse. Their latest album, The Resistance, is overblown, overproduced, self-indulgent twaddle of the highest order (IMHO). Depending on my mood at the time it's gloriously OTT..............or unlistenable drivel. :D

Mutter by Rammstein is an album I really rather enjoy. :D
Cheers
