Cats do a good job on mice, but they're not quite big enough for rats. For reliable ratting, you need a something like a Jack Russell or a Yorkshire/Cairn/Skye/Scots Terrier.
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

Years ago I had one skye that was really good. He'd just give them a whip in the air and that was it. I had another one that use to present me with "bits", a tail, a head.... I guess he ate the rest-yuck. Skyes are great on groundhogs and snakes too.

My mother grew up on a sheep farm in South Africa, and when she was young they had a pair of Jack Russels, which would team up to kill mambas (v. poisonous snakes). When they found one, the dogs would arrange themselves on either side of it, and make fake lunges toward it. The snake would respond by striking at the dogs, but they never got close enough to be in danger. When the snake was exhausted and no longer able to strike, one would lunge at it for real, & get it behind the neck. One quick shake would break its neck, and that would be the end of the Mamba.
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

My cat died a few hours ago. She was with my mother, and they were crossing the street. My mother stopped for an oncoming car and the cat didn't, and got run over. I miss that cat.

I'm sorry to hear it. That's sad.

:D here's one

Here's two.

Plus one cat that keeps the bunny population under control, and another working his way through the local reptile hoards.

I once watched one of our cats chase a rabbit through a field. The cat closed on the rabbit and was nearly on top of it when the rabbit's hind feet caught the kitty under the chin, flipping the cat backwards. By the time the cat got up and shook itself off, the rabbit was long gone.

-I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your nice beast, Walden. We had a similar loss decades ago and while nothing could salve our grief, a kitten adopted right after was heartening. There is nothing like a chummy cat at the right time.
