I can't believe I'm actually reading some of this incredibly llooonnnggg thread! But I had to respond to Michael's plea for votes. Before casting my vote, I want to know what you consider "boy bands." There are a few I wouldn't mind having more of.....

By "boy bands" I mean, of course, "bands of boys."

I finally found a way to get a decent upload to work. Hope it works for others to access.

Here's a my picture from a recent trip to the MD Renfest.

Okay I was enjoying more than just my music, but one does need to occasionally wet one's whistle...

Gee, I don''t know. It means "always living" ...
Are you sure? wouldn't that be sempervivens, or something? It sounds more like "vir" in there, which means "man" and has given us such cutie-pie words as virile or virtue (virtus meant "manly courage/strength" originally, now isn't that pc for you?).
"Ever living" is what I was taught too, but according to a couple of sources I've seen since, it's supposed to mean "ever-green" (though I would think that would be "semperverans"). Oh well. Turns out the Sequoya after whom they were named was, indeed, Cherokee. The fellow that gave them their Latin name wanted to honor him for devising a written alphabet for the Cherokee language. I guess there are worse memorials than having your name tacked onto a tree that can live 2000 years or more

And if y'all think sempervirans is a hard name to spell, pity his poor cousin: sequoiadendron giganteum (aka, the Giant Sequoia).

Check out these cutie-pie trees. They're neighbors of mine:

The official plant species of the cutie-pie thread. Some out my windee here at 'work".

Walking thru mature redwood groves is an experience I hope all of you will someday experience. On the one hand, its pretty quiet, but you can literally feel their presence...a form of energy if you will. Its like they're breathin or something.I have spent many hours there.

Signed, the never-too-far from a redwood Weekender.

Kinda like walking through a section of prairie with 4-6 foot tall bluestem? The sound of that grass moving with the wind and the dry green smell is pretty rejuvinating for me as well. Thankfully there is a few square miles of native grassland a couple miles from my front door.

I'll tell you the best one of all: Normally the North Rim of the Grand Canyon closes about Nov. 1 because of snow; however, one day some years ago I drove that way (not far from where I grew up) in mid-November and was surprised to discover the road still open. I drove the additional miles out from the gate to the North Rim and found only one other car in the parking lot at the lodge. As I parked and got out, the people in that car drove away. Amazingly, I was completely alone on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The chances of that happening would have to be one in a zillion. I hiked down to one of the lookout points and stood there for the longest time and listened. It was if there was an actual spirit to the Canyon and the Colorado River far below. It was one of the most amazing, spiritual experiences of my life - one I'll never forget.

Sequoyah's last name was actually Guess. He was of mixed Cherokee and Celtic descent, a distant cousin of mine.
