Nah, the recessed areas on the fret board are spots that are worn down by the fingers from years and years of playing. My old Strat and my old Martin had them.

Have you ever had a chance to take a look at the late great Rory Gallagher's Strat? Serious wear. :D

Well I'll be dipped in dog doo doo, it is scalloped. I wonder what the point of that is? Maybe it allows for deeper bending of the strings. Hmmmm....

Supposedly it allows for less friction so you can bend the string further and easier, and it also allows for greater speed. Having just done a quick bit of reading up on scalloped frets it derives from Indian music and classical instruments (some lutes used to have scalloped frets apparently).

The thing is you can achieve a similar effect with jumbo frets and it's a lot cheaper (and easier to fix if it goes wrong!).

I suppose it is the same principle behind the 'elevated' frets one finds on the Sitar.

Scalloped frets have been around forever. Mahavishnu John McLaughlin has used them since at least the 60s.

(I think the original film is about Gumby's first yeast infection, but I could be wrong.)
