Mine is very well made, has a nice tone and very good intonation (2nd octave much less flat than most other whistles), but it is surprisingly quiet.
Good for home use but not really for band or session work. But maybe that's just mine.

I can only chime in with a bold statement: Cancel you Sindt order and get the Killarney, it's every bit as good IMO..
(If not better, since i don't have to half-hole C-nat or graft a Feadóg tube on to get a decent cross fingered C-nat)
It has a different voice though. I think they can very well co-exist as two different whistles.

I don't see why it would be unsuitable for use in session or band environment. Unless you're in huge loud grouping but they wouldn't suit any whistle, that's what flutes were invented for. I am not a fan of the arms race seeking ever louder playing instruments.

Well maybe yours is louder than mine. But I would certainly have problems hearing myself playing with other (fairly loud) instruments.

I was kind of hoping for the opposite.

Highly unlikely.

My own approach is that if the environment is too noisy for your instrument to be heard, it's not worth playing in.

A few weeks ago, at a booklaunch, I found myself playing with two accordions, a fiddle, a guitar and a full drumkit sharing three microphones between us. The people in the bar and the dancers complained they could only hear the drummer. There's no point to that sort of thing so it's out of there for me as soon as the dancers done their set..

In a non-amplified environment, any whistle is a heck of a lot louder than the player thinks.

For example, in an old pub (that burned to the ground the morning after a smoking session...ironic, huh) with a bathroom remarkably far away and up a flight of stairs, the only thing you could hear was the whistle when you were in there.

Whistles carry...be kind to your mates and the punters...you don't need the loudest whistle known to man.

Received a confirmation email overnight...should be at my door within two weeks (depending on postal times). My experience with packages coming from Ireland tends to be about a week or so.

Got mine in the mail today. I can confirm almost all that has been written here before. Very good whistle. Quite strong tone. Only complaint: Head is stuck, does not move a single mm, no matter how hard I twist. Might have to try the fridge later.

Drop of oil might help, too, since the slide is metal on metal.

I feel bad for Jem...trying so hard to say "no".

Ha! You didn't help!

Anyway, I've succumbed and ordered one (hence my previous.....). :waah:
What do I need another D whistle for? (Not that I have loads, but I have what I need for playing and very good too....)
Still, it is Christmas.......

Good for you, Jem! I didn't want you to feel left out. I really don't need another D whistle, either, but this one just sounds ideal for what I like in a whistle.

Tell us something.: I like whistles, flutes, lyres, cittern/mandolin/bouzouki family instruments, as well as heavy and nasty slap bass. Languages, linguistics, history (especially Migration Period and Bronze Age Europe), cuisine from various parts of Latin America, chili growing, bushcraft, and the works of JRR Tolkien also tickle my fancy.

I ordered mine on the 16th as well, but it didn't come yesterday! For some reason everything passing through southern Indiana takes an extra day for some unexplainable reason...

Anyway, I expect I shall have it tomorrow! I look forward to trying it out! I hope mine doesn't have the head stuck problem! Isn't this a common issue when two different metals are put together like this sometimes?
