Two others that deserve mention, certainly-Phil Hardy, and his pal Tony Hinnigan (aka Chief Wanguani). I only have heard Tony on Phil's site, but he has his own website too I believe. Yep, found it here: http://www.tonyhinnigan.com/index.php

Phil of course, can be heard on his website http://www.Kerrywhistles.com, and has some CD's out as well. Just was listening to Phil's Whistleworks CD, and he does play well, no doubt. I would love to hear some slower stuff from him though (like his recent Jewish Lament he posted in a recent clip). There is a separate listing for each artist on his website, including Phil's clips here. Give a listen to the Jewish Lament under the Phil Hardy heading on the left, and just see if it doesn't inspire the low whistler in you!: http://www.kerrywhistles.com/movie.php?groupID=47#

That really is the kind of music I prefer, and would most enjoy from any Low Whistle album, for my ears. I just wasn't born with so much kinetic energy I guess!

One more interesting find, an old thread on Chiff on the same idea here, Low Whistlers: viewtopic.php?t=49703

Feadoggie wrote:Barry, I don't see a distinction between "whistle player" and "low whistle player". Low whistles are just lower pitched. I don't know many players that would declare themselves as only a low whistle player.

But I'll play anyway - Cormac Breatnach.

Just his latest, AFAIK. He's provided a lot of great whistle stuff over the years, much of it in the lower pitches.

Yes, great stuff Dennis-a treat for the ears and the eyes-nice video to enhance the playing, for sure. Thanks for that!

Nobody has mentioned Finbar Furey co-developer of the Overton low D. He is a fine singer as well.
I've never met a whistle I didn't want.

Yes, he can surely play-though it's on a Low A here, and those high notes are pretty penetrating. Would like to hear him play something on the Low D. Couldn't find anything on Youtube of him playing a lower whistle, but I did find a version of Lonesome Boatman that I liked better-and no tuning clash between his A whistle and the high D? (towards the end when he goes over to her) in the video above.

This one has a nice story and pictures to go along with it, especially for those who like a maritime theme:

Yes, I actually like your version better (with the story/images), while I posted the link I did so as to see Finbar actually playing the low whistle. I could listen to that tune all day.

Didn't know Fred, thanks Davy, that was a nice treat hearing the tune Passing Places on the Low D, very nice guitar backup too!

Also just listened to Terry Clarke-Coyne for the first time too, on his Bass A solo doing Bonny Bunch of Roses! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeEYEr5dG3o

Now I'll nominate a Chiffer, not of pro status, but could easily be under the right circumstances. His name is Ashley Jones, or member name Ash. here on Chiff, and has put a bunch of clips on the Clips and Snips Archives (check the C&F forum index for the link), OK, here it is: http://www.tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/index.htm

There are tunes of him playing in Slow Airs, Misc, and Flute, so do the Control +F search to find his name in each category, and you'll be treated to some fine playing. He uses mostly diaphragm vibrato I believe, so if you're not a fan of that, then maybe it's not for you, but I say don't limit yourself to such narrow dimensions, and try to appreciate the mastery of the tune or finesse on the instrument as it may be.

He has breath control down to a science, and a timing and feel for the music, without formal training (yeah, can you believe it comes naturally to some people?!), whether he's playing a high d, Low D, Queanacho, or plucked psaltery?, no matter-he has talent to boot, and I am glad to have known him via email for a long while-as we were both discovering whistles long ago. He also plays trad to classical, Irish and British, to Japanese to Bolivian folk, and any other tunes he fancies. He's a Brit native, now living near Boston, via way of Texas and Oregon. Besides that, he's just a nice guy, and I'm priveliged to know him and his music.

He also makes Quenachos, among other artistic endeavors, and has a Youtube channel, http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=flu ... iew=videos and an artistic website besides (lost that one though). I wish I had half his talent, and still I am in awe of the expression and deftness Ashley shows in his music. If anyone is a master of musical performance, he defines it to me, and I place him among the well knowns that also demonstrate their virtuosity. He might not be all ITrad, finger vibrato, no tonguing, etc, but what he delivers is still amazing to me, even though most is done low key-not in a furious state, which I can relate to very positively!

Here's one of the reasons I have a Reyburn Maple head narrow bore Low D:
http://www.tinwhistletunes.com/clipssni ... .Jones.mp3

It's a simple Andean tune, but it sounds great when he plays it! Anyway, you get the idea-I think he's a special talent that should be experienced, even if he is not a pro. And Ash, I'm sorry if I made you more public than you wanted-but it needs to be shard!

I was familiar with many of the artists mentioned but not Finbar...Thank You for that link! What a great tune and truly a master.

As for Fred Morrison, he is by far my favorite. If you have never attended one of his workshops you don't know what you're missing. Last year I hosted the first Pipes & Whistles On Lake Tahoe with Fred Morrison. He had such a great time we are currently making plans for the next one in October of this year. I should have more details in a few weeks.

Tell us something.: May 2022, I'm a second-time beginner to the whistle and low whistle after a three-year gap due to a chest injury brought to an end twelve years of playing. I've started on a high whistle and much is coming back quickly but it will be a while before I can manage a Low D again where my interest really lies. I chiefly love slow airs rather than dance tunes and am a fan of the likes of Davy Spillane, Eoin Duignan, Fred Morrison and Paddy Keenan.

I have to agree Tony Hinnigan is a great and versatile player. Check out the gorgeous Slow Air Demo he plays at http://tonyhinnigan.com/moviedl.php?group=32 under Strings & Things.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Ah Staker Wallace. Not fussed on that version. Way too much reverb for my taste, for a start. Plus, the rhythm (and harmony) conflicts with my inner version, gleaned from the likes of this one, which DrPhill put me onto a year or two back:

http://comhaltas.ie/music/detail/comhal ... merick_air

Not whistle, I know, but beautiful anyway.

I can't actually find one on whistle that I like, but I like this one on pipes right enough. :)

Meanwhile, back on-topic, I don't see a mention for one of my favourites - Liam Kelly, who plays a wonderful Grinter low D whistle, IIRC. I've had a go - couldn't play it. :)
