Penny whistle in B

Post by nemethmik »

Where can I buy a tunable penny whistle in B (to match my Irish pipe chanter in B) from an European online music store?
Thank You!

Wow, more than 200 euros for a "penny" whistle!
Thank You for the link. I am looking for something much cheaper.

200 euros is pretty cheap for a professional quality instrument that will last a lifetime and retain most of it's value. For something cheaper Susato do a B and their medium sized whistles seem to be ok.

Very true. I do not play the whistle, nor I want to learn. I want this B whistle keep in my pipe case and lend it to a whistler when I want to play tunes on my B chanter with a whistler. 99% of the whistlers have never heared about B.
Thank You for your help, I think I'll go for the Susato.

I have a Susato B and it is a nice whistle. It is milder/sweeter sounding that the other susatos I have (a low A and a high E) and is an easy player.

What would a wild walrus whistle if a walrus could whistle wild?

The second mouse may get the cheese but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

Hi nemethmik

You could try Big Whistle in the UK. They are not showing any B whistles at the moment, but no doubt they can get you a Susato, or he can get you a Syn B from Erle Bartlett (Syn Whistles on the forum) which would be my preference.

Try Guido, make one, or you can shorten the tube on a Bb Gen to get a playable B whistle.

I second Walrii. If you want something even less expensive, get a Generation, take the head off, and cut a few mm off of the top of the tube. There are directions for it (I think) in the forum archives, possibly on the main C&F website.

PCP outlines the modification thusly:

Take the head off a Generation B flat, and chop the top of the tube until the upper-hand notes are in tune to the B scale:
xoo ooo is G sharp
xxo ooo is F sharp
Then chop the bottom until it plays an in-tune B.
Then carve out the lowest tone hole until it plays an in-tune C sharp.
Then carve out the next-lowest hole until it plays an in-tune D sharp.
And Bob's Your Uncle!
There were also threads in the pipe forum which may have gone into even more detail as well. You can read through these if you like.

I especially like my Whitecap PVC B whistle, but he only ships to US addresses, I believe.

I would add my vote for the Susato. The favourite B whistles in my rack are Susato and Overton.

If price is an issue, go the Gonzato route. You have the satisfaction of making the thing.
I've made a B. Guido didn't have measurements for it - his measurements were for a Bb, but it's easy to work out.
If you can't, PM me.

I'm about to order a Susato B for the upcoming SoCal Tionól. If you already own a favorite Susato S head, $21 for the extra B body is really quite reasonable for a very nice whistle.
