Interesting whistle mouthpiece build

Post by fearfaoin »

This guy used SUGRU, which he describes as
"a clay-like silicone rubber product" to make
the mouthpiece for a slide whistle.

Sounds like an interesting way to experiment
with mouthpiece shape/size, though I'm not
sure how workable it is after it dries...

Yeah, me neither.

Weird. "SUGRU" sounds so Japanese.

According to the pics on the linked site the edge of the blade will be aligned with the top of the windway (vertically, in a cross section), which won't work well (or only work if overblowing). Typically the edge of the blade is aligned halfway between the top and the bottom of the windway, or slightly lower. Minute adjustments can make a big difference there.

SUGRU - It's just another polyclay like Sculpey and Fimo, which is not safe for the mouth in it's raw form.
A PVC based compound with volatile esters and fillers to soften it.
Might be safe after firing it but no-one will commit to say that it is or not in this "afraid of your own shadow" and "ambulance chasing lawyer" driven society.
