No More Lurking For Me

Post by Jeff Stallard »

I've been reading this board for a few weeks, and I like what I see, so I'm coming out of the closet. Uhh...well...you know what I mean.

Anyway, I'm chiefly a mandolinist, but I've been noodling around with a penny whistle for a few weeks now. It's strange moving to whistle from strings, because on the mando, to go to a higher note, you put a finger down, but on the whistle, you take a finger off. I'm getting better fast, but that really screwed me up at first.

I bought five whistles, but my favorite so far is the Little Black Whistle. My (Clark?) Mellow D has a great sound, but the second octave is really tough to hit. My silver Generations (can't think of the model) is a close second to the Little Black Whistle.

After Christmas, I think I'll try a low D and see what all the commotion is about finger stretches. I also play tenor guitar, so hopefully my fingers are used to the stretching.

So anyway, hello fellow whistlers.

:-?

Edit: Oh I get it. That's your user name. For a second I thought it was some inside joke at my expense. :) I don't usually pay attention to user names, so please pardon my misunderstanding.

No prob. I could have introduced myself as Jason, couldn't I? They just call me Nano around here. My real name's become a tad unreal to me by now. :)

Hey Jeff, I'm new here myself, and I can't tell you how glad I am to hear someone else say they have problems hitting the second octave on a Mellow D. I was beginning to wonder if mine was defective. :)

Hi Jeff! My real-life name is Steven, but like Nano, I prefer to be called by my username on the board.

Welcome to the board you two!

I think the 2nd octave in general is tough for most new players..that is, unless you come from a singing background, or reed instrument background, or something where you already are used to really pushing your breath out there. For those people, sometimes bringing things down to the first octave is what's the challenge.

I remember that for a couple of years one of my criteria for a "good whistle tune" was one that didn't hang out in the 2nd octave much.

Thanks Wanderer! I still prefer a song that doesn't go above high g, but I'm getting used to playing in the 2nd octave. Still the same amount of pressure it takes me to hit a 2nd octave D on the Waltons, gets me a 3rd octave D on my SweetTone or Susato.

Hello, I'm new too. But not to the whistle. If it's easy yer doing it wrong.

Keep going. Good luck

Love

Greetings, Jeff and welcome to the board. Your life will never be the same again. (I've always wanted to use one of those "Twisted" icons, but never had a reason till now.)

By the way, my name is Will. But people around here generally just call me Will. Either one is fine. I'm pretty flexible. :)
