Semi OT Poll - How many instruments can you play?

Post by Jayhawk »

OK - Time for a little pole here. How many instruments do you play? My definition of play here is how many are you able to pick up today and still play a few tunes on - maybe not at master level, but with a few weeks practice you'd be decent.

Then, along with voting, put a list of the instruments you play in a message. Let's not count different keys of whistles or styles of flute for example as different instruments though.

Here's my short list:

Flute (Irish & baroque) - My main instrument.
Whistle
Guitar
Mandolin

What I'm not counting are the piano (it's been 15 years since I played anything) or saxophone (nearly 20! - argh, I'm getting old).

So, what do you all play?

Eric

PS - Poll results could lead me to convince my spouse that I'm not nuts to buy a tenor banjo...

In order of competency-decent on the first two, middling on the third and making humbling ventures into musicality on the last two. -Have to admit nobody actually requests the banjo-they just let on afterward it wasn't quite as bad as they feared it would be.

Guitar
5-string Banjo
Mandolin
Flute
Whistle

That question determines greatly on your definition of "play." By a tighter definition, I can play 4. Loosely, 7.

Flute, Whistle, Trumpet, Sax

Piano, Harmonica, Violin
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine.

Interesting poll, Jayhawk! I picked 4-5, because that's the number I don't totally embarrass myself with if I play where it can be heard.

My list, from first learned ... (not counting spoons :) )
Clarinet
Piano
Trombone
Baritone (doubt I can still play this well)
Baritone Uke (chords only)
Whistle
Flute and Fife in 'almost bearable' stage

Anyone has a harp they want to find a good home for -- I'll pay postage. :D Always willing to learn more, musically speaking.

Tell us something.: I moved, so I'm in a different city. Not in Texas anymore!!! Although if someone sees that I'm in NYC, maybe they'll know of local places that I can look for whistles.

Uilleann pipes
Scottish smallpipes
Northumbrian smallpipes
fiddle
flute
whistle
guitar
mandolin
5 string banjo
bass

Most of these are gathering dust since I started playing Uilleann pipes. Sometimes it just takes a while to find just the right instrument.

I'm part Polish, and pretty short: do I qualify?

Seriously, I play the following to some extent...

Whistle (duh!)
Recorder (Sopranino down through Bass)
Mandolin
Irish and Modern flute
Guitar
Bones
Fiddle (but you might not want to listen to me...)
Piano
Clavichord (built from a kit)
Hammered Dulcimer (newbie)
Tenor Banjo

I think there are one or two more batting around, but I can't recall them at the moment.
Got wood?

Keep 'em coming folks! This is fun.

Wombat and CO. (you multi-multi instramentalists) - I entered a pole option for 8+, but I guess I exceeded the number of pole answers allowed...feel free to select 6-7 and I'll assume it's a 6+ category.

wow :boggle: you must all be f***ing brilliant players to manage that many instruments :boggle:

i'm glad i can learn my tunes by ear on the whistle and for the last three weeks i'm learning on the button box aswell. i practice many hours a day, but i don't have the lives of a cat, so i better stick with whistling and button boxing! i just want to learn as many tunes as i can and enjoy it.
