Can someone identify this tune for me?

Post by BrianG »

I thought I would try to learn the first tune in this set and realized that even though the video is entitled 'Mist Covered Mountain Set' the first tune is not Mist Covered Mountain but something else. If someone could tell me what tune this is it would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

I know it as Out On The Ocean. Couldn't remember its name for a while there, myself.

I know it as out on the ocean. I play it in a set with the rolling waves, the humors of trim (also called the rolling wave) and the black rogue. I call it my pirate set :p

Sure, but the old dogs here like to have their brains tapped now and then. Keeps 'em spry.

Tunepal's been pretty handy at house sessions when we want to jog the memory or make sure we're not playing Frankentunes. :)

The Portroe jig is the name under which the tune appeared on the Paddy Canny, PJ Hayes lp. I haven't really seen it called that anywhere else, except by people who learned it from that recording. It appears as Out on the Ocean in O'Neill's, which probably makes it the older name.

As I have the lp sitting on the table beside me:
