Re: Which option to pursue?

Susato "S" series are less than $40 and are very good players. Nice and loud with a strong and stable 1st octave. Upper range gets a little piercing. The smaller bore model "VS" should be a little softer. My recommendation would be for Jerry Freeman tweaked whistles and in parti...

Re: Low D Whistle V Diatonic Shak

I tried a (keyless)flute but got nothing musical out of it. Not even a hint. And it wasn't the flute - it plays well in other folks hands. It's worth persevering with the flute. Practice half an hour a day in front of a mirror for a week and you are almost guaranteed to get a reasonably good tone f...

Re: cork or waxed thread joints.

I also replaced the cork joints on my collection of wooden recorders with waxed thread a couple of years ago. The thread option works much better for me as it is much more forgiving and more easy to adjust in this climate. Before this I had a corked joint seize rock solid for several days on two sep...

Most Gens are fine after the usual tweaks. My guess would be that they are all keepers.

Re: Which Larsen book....or both?

There is no need to get upset because I prefer the larger version. We are all at liberty to have our own opinions. I compared both of Larsen's books and preferred the "The complete guide to Irish flute and tin whistle" which I bought. You yourself said that you disagreed with your 'buddies...

Gen Ds are the worst I have ever bought as they have all squeaked terribly. I have some great Gen Bb, Eb and C whistles though.

My vote for the perfect whistle goes to Overton. Here is a web page where you hear various whistle makes which will perhaps give you an idea of the tone you would like from your ideal whistle. http://www.micksvirtualwhistle.net/whistle/index.html Clips & Snips is another place to listen to whist...

The only possible name for a low D made by Clarke (Kent) is Superwhistle.

Wise advice!

If you want some reliable in-tune cheapies then order Feadog nickel whistles in D and C.
