Re: Plastic whistle cleaning tips???
Highland piper, I'm surprised you suggested vodka rather than blended whiskey (well, you wouldn't waste a single malt).

Re: Cross fingering and or half holing
I'll say the same thing in different words. In cross fingering, further holes are closed down the whistle/flute from the first open hole. Although it is not often needed, a Bb on a D whistle would normally be half-holed X/0 000 (/ = half hole) but it could be cross-fingered with something like XOX X...

Re: Need Help Transposing from E-flat Major to C Whistle...
loyukfai Re-read Guru's reply and follow his instructions - copy the ABC notation that he wrote out for you and paste it in the Concertina.net converter that he gave you a link for. This will give you the melody that you can play on any whistle. Most whistlers treat the whistle as a transposing inst...

Re: Asking for Suggestions on Whistles
I'll add my vote for the legendary Freeman Mellow Dog. It is still one of my all time favourites. If you do want to buy a Gen D then my advice is don't get an untweaked one this early in your whistle career as you have a very high chance of being disappointed. Ideally you need a box full of Gen D's ...

Re: Waltons "110 Best" Series -- Any Good?
My experience is similar to some of the other posters here. I found the two volumes of 110 Whistle Tunes to be most helpful. But other volumes including 110 Carolan Tunes were also good investments but I found 110 Slow Airs to be the least helpful.

I agree. They should all be low cost, that way I could afford a whole set of Burkes and Goldies.Walden wrote:The whole idea of expensive pennywhistles doesn't appeal to me.

Re: need help in choosing a low d for my hubby
Do you need to surprise your husband? His input would be of valuable in all of this. What about a gift certificate? What about having him put together a wish list? He might want something completely different. Husbands are like that. I've been one for awhile. I agree. How would you react if he chos...

Re: Want something a little louder
Happy hunting! I have not found any conical whistles to be particularly loud.
Susato Kildare whistles are loud and have a slightly tapered bore, but they are very different to Clark whistles.

Re: New To The Whistle - Hello and Quick Question
Welcome to C&F Ken.
You'll discover that a great many competent players of the Irish whistle do not read music, and some regard learning the dots as a hindrance to playing well. Personally I think reading music is a useful skill for musicians but it is by no means essential.

It sounds like a tweaked Generation to me. It might even be one of Jerry's.

Re: Convince me...
I traded my Bleasy olivewood high D as it was a wee bit too loud for me at the top even for my tastes. Apart from that it was a great whistle and I enjoyed the complexity of tone and the slight resistance.

That is the tone I regard as reedy, but I couldn't have described it as well. Πολύ καλά!MTGuru wrote:... I think it's a kind of complexity where some upper partials seem particularly prominent compared to the fundamental. Plus some breathiness.
