I've played with a few and the iPhone seems seems like a nice little device. The display is sharp and the web browsing in an interesting experience with the multi-touch screen. But the lack of a development kit is a deal breaker for me. It doesn't do everything my Treo does and I can yet write repla...

I recently started reading Tim Powers, the last book was "Declare" which was a mix of WWII espionage and the supernatural. He took real events from the British WWII spy service and weaved an alternate history around it involving D'Jinn living on Mt. Ararat. I'm looking forward to reading m...

Ouch, I hope there's a good return policy at the store you bought the broiler from. We celebrated a day late to accommodate my dad's work schedule. I brined the turkey overnight and roasted it, turned out great. Last night I made caramel custard for dessert, hmmm. I'm definitely going to the gym tom...

Ditto from Houston. The turkey's ready to be brined and the sweet potatoes are ready to be roasted and mashed.

"If trees could scream do you think we would be so cavalier as to cutting them down? Maybe if they screamed all the time for no good reason." “If you ever fall off the Sears Tower, just go real limp, because maybe you'll look like a dummy and people will try to catch you because, hey, free...

I hate reading from a screen, though I have to do it all day long. The real benefits, it seems to me, are the ones emmline touched on, where a great deal of academic or research information would be available on-line, cross-referenced, and easily researched. The new eInk technology is great, it's n...

I don't agree with Jeff Bezos that dedicated devices will replace books. They're too good at what they do and there are too many people (like me) who just love the physical nature of books. But I don't agree that they're useless either. The ability to read stuff from the net on the go without wastin...

Book, electronic and otherwise

I like books. Besides the content, which is the core, the reason for having a book, I like the physical nature of them. I like fonts, I like nice paper and a good binding, and I appreciate the thought that goes into laying out the content in a pleasing manner. I'm also an engineer and a gadget freak...

Alton Brown did an episode on pocket pies a while back including meat pies. I've been meaning to try it out but haven't had the time. I was going to use my wife's "ground turkey with Indian spices" as the filling. Growing up pot pies were always a staple. I didn't try mince meat pie until ...

Is that a big problem? Because I'm left-handed and would right hate it if I couldn't use something as classy as a fountain pen. I just have to be more of aware of how I'm holding my hand. So far I've not had any really problems. The few times I had trouble, it turned out the nib was a bit dirty or ...

This is up there with the version from Miller's Crossing. I always found that Tommy guns really bring out the pathos.

(I just noticed season 2 of the Muppet Show is out on DVD!)

I have several Pelikan's that I used day to day and my wife just gave me a very nice Mon Blanc for my 40th birthday. But it's too nice and I don't want to take it out of the house in fear of losing it! It's a little difficult for me since I'm left handed, I have to make sure I don't drag my hand ove...

Found an appropriate garden gnome

I found this a few weeks ago: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/beowulf/2038013108/" title="Reel or Jigs? by Eddie McCreary, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2397/2038013108_b1b044c561_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="...
