Hi, Mark, how's it going up in Poohville? :D You said this young spark is 11-ish. That's more than old enough to start a paper route or lawn care business to raise some dosh. Sometimes it takes the kid to show some effort to get the familial purse strings to loosen up. Its often not enough just to ...

A Mawkish Proposal

Hi all; So I've been attending a weekly session here in loverly Winnipeg for about a year now and there's this young kid, about 11ish who's got a set of pipes that ...uh... you know.... COUGH( suck )COUGH... anyway, they're loaners and way too big for him and I seriously doubt that I could get them ...

That is very nice looking. I would suggest a goat or perhaps wild boar sacrifice to the Gods of piping. AND you can use the aforementioned goat/boar skin as a new cover! Not to mention a nifty set of snacks for afters as well. Hang the skin on a stretcher, wait 10 days and with a hey presto! a new ...

Hey Lorenzo:

I go to that site a lot. It's very useful for me.

Just thought you might like to know.

A year ago I've said Paddy Keenan, six months ago I'd have said Seamus Ennis, now I'd say Willy Clancy, perhaps in six months it'll be Patsy Touhey, or Garret Barry, or whomever it may be then. 'Most signifcant impact' is a difficult thing to judge, for either style or promotion. How deep do you go?...

The rate of wear on a chanter seems to depend on the individual. Some people's skin just seems to be more abrasive than others. Bill I have a friend who is infamous in our corner of the musical community for having incredibly caustic skin. I once restrung my guitar at a party and Courtney (my frien...

http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/Movies/9903/08/kubrick.obit/strangelove.jpg The magazine pic has made this post worthwhile, how bout more slime molds etc.? Love that stuff. I'm either too young (born 1970), or just haven't watched enough movies (too much practicing the pipes  ), but what was the n...

Hi all; I'm not really sure what I'm looking at here. Aside from the face that this man has no head (odd enough I'll admit, but distinctly off topic) what's up with the bass drone? It sure looks to me like there's more tubing involved than usual. Or have I fallen victim to tricks of perspective and ...

Hey Teflon; I'd say use hard D as the standard, but use soft D as a variation when it's musically sensible to do so. You'll get used to the hard D. It's one of the 'special' notes, kinda like Cnat or the second octave A, or a nice blue B. I especially like to end a dance tune when the ending note is...

Hey all: There's no offence taken here, marc and Joseph. The painting made me laugh, too. It just was one of those things that makes you go "Hmmmm....". So I asked the question. I think I got my answer; If you're a good bodhran player, you're at least tolerated (ex-hockey-playing flautists...

So. Bodhran is not accepted (yet) into IrTrad circles because: a) it's neccessity it questioned (do we really need rhythm instruments when we already have strongly rhythmic music?), b) it's historically new (in that it's really only been played for 45 or 50 years or so as a musical instrument in IrT...

Is there such a thing as a good bodhran player?

Hi everybody; So, question time. Perhaps a little off-topic, but as a lot of people seem to feel that dissing bodhran on this forum is okay, I think asking this question should be okay too. I'm not trying to start a fight -although I'm always up for a good land war in China- I'm trying to understand...

I have a hammered/mountain dulcimer case that fits my half set quite nicely. The pipes sit a touch loosely in it so I have to be careful with gestures. The case material is that hardened cardboard stuff and there's some kind of fun fur stuff on the inside. It's not all that sturdy, but for a 'gig ba...
