The wind cap bears no similarity. In fact, the only similarity is between the mounts and ferrule at the throat, and it's a very common set up in many makers design (and a very appealing one it is too). The windcap is very much like a Froment (though it isn't). In fact, I can only echo Toms remarks f...

http://img.waffleimages.com/df544762b155de664b499b0c832bc430e34a42b9/gouges.gif A is my first ever gouge, quite old now. It's the old NPU #6 incannel. I don't really use it. B is the type I use now (is this what you meant by 'toe' Bill?), you can see how it has been specially ground on the corners....

How many times do you wet and sand down these fibers? Surely as you swell them and sand them you just remove them to allow a new layer to appear, a bit like exfoliation? The case for a burnished or polished surface would be a bit different. I did use a method once or twice (it came from Cillian O'Br...

I think you missed my point Joe. I said that I didn't have any comment about longevity, but that any added *uniformity* would be lost in translation after binding etc., Think about what happens to the curvature of the blades, particularly around the shoulders compared the actual parts that beat or t...

My penneth. By the time you've cut and chamfered tails, tied it to a staple, scraped the the blades, added a bridle etc., the usefulness of any 'precise' uniformity gained by 'raising the grain' etc., is likely to be lost or not hold much sway on the working reed. Whether it has an effect on the ton...

Stevie, Seriously, get in touch with the South West Association of Uilleann Pipers http://www.swaup.org You're sure to get plenty of advice on this forum, but if you contact someone through SWAUP or get to one of their meetings, you can get realtime audio visual confirmation of what Uilleann Pipes a...

Stevie, It sounds like you are picking up some rather bad habits. Do not think of the whistle as like the pipes. Check out http://www.swaup.org they hold meetings near Taunton (if I remember correctly) every 2 months. There are quite a few pipers around the S.W. , you should find the assistance you ...
