Re: Spruce Chanter Reed (demo)
I meant to say thinner edge of the belly; the last half inch wouldn't be good enough. I got the majority of my stock of spruce from my old teacher in Yugoslavia, and he was obsessive about the grain orientation, for precisely the reasons you mention. As I think about it more, turning a tube on the l...

Re: Spruce Chanter Reed (demo)
Thanks, David!
I was actually wondering what to do with the remainder of the belly, so I'll use the thin edge of the wedge first as you describe.

Re: Spruce Chanter Reed (demo)
The stuff I will be using is Picea Abies, which grows all over. This I use this for violin family instruments after a "dunk test". The lighter the wood the less it sinks, and I aim for 65% maximum submersion. This should give a good belly, so long as it flexes and twists correctly (for a f...

Re: Spruce Chanter Reed (demo)
I am about to make a few of these, but am going to cheat! I will use some close grained Italian spruce, originally intended for viola bellies, but will cut off the thickest section, turn it round on the Boxford, then bore and ream it out to the size of cane I use, then treat it as a cane tube. I've ...

Re: Musette de Cour (looking for info and an instrument)
Chris Bayley from Surrey, UK makes traditional Musettes de Cour. He had two or three sets under construction when I was last in his workshop. He is a member of this forum so you could PM him or email him at: christopher.bayley@ntlworld.com
They aren't cheap.

Re: New double chanter?
Chris certainly makes double chanters. I was over at his workshop a few weeks ago and there were a couple of double blanks on his shelf awaiting the reamer. His health is getting better and it shouldn't be too long before one surfaces. The reeds for these things are tiny, and the sound certainly car...

Chanter and Drone Cane available
I have a substantial amount of UP sized Arundo Donax, from our trip to France in 2014. Nicely seasoned and makes excellent reeds. PM or email me for details.

Re: Metal ferrule decoration
I know Chris Bayley has an OT lathe, because I got his spare Boxford which he had adapted for OT work. I think Martin Preshaw has one as well. Our Bill Haneman may still have one, as I remember him offering his collection of Holtzappfel books on here some years back. I suspect that some of the more ...

The correct Harmonized Tariff Schedule Code for Bagpipes is:
9205.90.2000
Enter this on your Waybill and it should sail through Customs.

Re: WTB: Sheet copper, 0.020"
PJ, When I was rolling chanter staples and making bridles I used to go down to our local scrap merchants and buy failed copper water heating boilers. They contain several square feet of nice copper and it would be cheaper than buying off the shelf.

Plus, if you do order from overseas, you won't pay import duty on anything to do with bagpipes going to the USA. Just make sure that the seller uses the Harmonized Tariff Code: 9205.90.2000 on the Customs Declaration.

Re: Stuck in US Customs??
Bob, I have sent quite a few sets of pipes, reeds etc. to customers in the USA, and with one exception all have arrived in a timely manner. Anything to do with bagpipes - of any description - is free from US Customs charges and all that needs to be done is for the sender to complete the CN22/CN23 Cu...

For some reason Ebay have limited this to the UK only. As I said in the listing I will post this worldwide.

Re: Staple for Bayley chanter
2 1/4 inches is about right. You can use hobby tubing type staple, but the ID must be 3.2mm. Hobby tube cannot be reamed out, and the ideal way to get the ID correct is to use a 3.2mm drill, with the blunt end rounded off and a slope put on it. Mount the drill the wrong way round in a lathe tailstoc...
