Re: A Question for the Scientifically Versed.

[D'oh! jsluder answered faster and better than I did below. But I'm glad the answer he found validates what I thought the case...] I don't think the youngling has it quite right; aluminum conducts heat relatively well (which is why it's used in cookware, after all). But that thin layer of foil can't...

Re: Robins?

If "fruits" includes seeds, then this might be understandable, but otherwise it looks like there's squat for a normal American robin's diet, here. I know I haven't been feeding 'em, although the neighbor lady has a bird (seed) feeder out. There are quite a few berries that are borne in wi...

Re: Robins?

Robins are one of those birds that migrate due to food pressures rather than in response to weather changes, and they'll happily stay in the snowy, cold north if there's an abundant food supply. If there's an abundant supply of berries/fruits, or lots of generous birdfeeders around you, you may well...

Re: Google Maps Street View

Yeah, it's impressive. But, aside from being able to say "Look what we did!", what's the point? I actually found that function useful when I was looking for places to rent when I decided to move. I wasn't familiar with every area of the city I decided to move to, and knew that some areas ...

Re: iPhone question.

If you buy the phone online at the Apple website , you have the option of choosing the date and time of your pickup at an Apple store, so you can be assured of there being one reserved for you. You may even be able to arrange for same-day pickup, I dunno. (I'm waiting for my Sprint contract to expir...

Re: Any iPod Touch users here?

This is the closest thing I've found to Chiff and Fipple for iTouch users: http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=113 Folks there by and large are pretty friendly and helpful. There's a pretty big community over at iLounge , as well. Their iPod Touch forum is right her...

Re: Tunes that get stuck in yr head - Revisited

The bane of my existence throughout the holiday season: music from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker". Argh. Having played orchestral brass instruments into my mid-twenties, I'd find myself hired frequently during this busy season to play in ballet pits, at holiday parties, with small local orches...

Re: Wooden Flute Maintenance DVD-ROM

Sounds very interesting. One question: is the DVD-ROM region-encoded? Or will those of us in the U.S. be able to pop this into our DVD player and watch, no problem?

Really looking forward to the book, as well!

Re: Inscrutable , thy name is 'Cat'!

Um...I understand my cat just fine. I've understood all of them, to a one. Well, sometimes they (or mine) make themselves understood. I sure know when she wants food, anyway, or when the litter box is unacceptably, er, littered. But, like, can you explain that thing where suddenly they park themsel...

(ooh...and Jeff is ellipticalling in the background there. so much info.) http://home.comcast.net/~emmline/hazel3.jpg It looks like what Jeff is really doing is riding a Star Wars-style hover-bike, or whatever those things are called that the Storm Troopers zoomed around on in the forest. I actually bought one of Nadishana's fujaras (not the futujara -- a "standard" PVC fujara with two bodies, tuned to different keys). I have a nice wooden fujara from Slovakia, but thought it would be fun to have the PVC version to knock around on, and to have different keys to play in. The...

They're fairly close relatives of Myna Birds, which are also domesticated. Here in Vancouver there's a tiny (and shrinking) flock of Mynas, the descendants of escaped birds kept by Chinese immigrants. Are there any mynas left in Vancouver? The Cornell ornithology website and articles on the web rec...

I've just been reading about the Steinhart Aquarium in SF. Apparently it has the largest living coral aquarium in the US. That would definitely be on my list of things to see. :) djm It's very nice; unfortunately, it doesn't open again to the public until fall (I think they're aiming at September)....
