Re: 3rd Octave Fingering with Michael Cronally Polymer Flute
Is it worth inquiring about which model M&E the OP is interested in? I have both the more recent R&R derived model and the older M&E Original design here. The bores and hole layouts are rather different. They do play differently as well. Venting varies between them for some notes.. I per...

Re: CP:Out from the shadows he comes...with a batch of whistles!
If they are anything like the Greenwood/Boisvert whistle I owned they should all be good players. Very comfortable in the hands too.pancelticpiper wrote:I do wonder what they all play like
The pink ivory whistle is a stand out for sure! Nice work all around, David.

Re: High D with thumb hole
I'd think a hole between the C# (TH1) and B (TH2) holes might get a better C natural.ericgrey wrote:Start with a hole of about 3mm halfway below & between the A and B holes and increase to tune.

Re: High D with thumb hole
Two other makers that I know have offered the thumbhole are Hans Bracker and Colin Goldie. Both make very good whistles IMO. Hans' website: http://bracker.co/music Goldie's: http://www.colingoldie.de Other makers may well do the same if you inquire with them. I have a few Burkes that have the added ...

Re: Best hard-blowing high D whisle for $100
The main question is, do you make the windway narrower, do you raise the floor, or lower the roof, or a combination of the 3 Just some thoughts. In most whistle designs it is critical to get the geometry between the floor of the windway and the edge of the blade correct. It very much determines how...

Re: Best hard-blowing high D whisle for $100
As I said early on in this thread, I think there is some confusion between a whistle which is a "hard-blower" in the Overton/Goldie sense and a whistle that can be or needs to be blown hard (especially in the second octave). That is what some would call "push". If a whistle "...

Re: Question low D - flute headjoint
Did Michael Copeland ever make flute a headjoint to fit on his Low Ds? I do not believe that he did. There could have been an oddity lying about the shop though. Who knows? But why would he? Remember, Michael Copeland made (and he can still make) absolutely wonderful timber flutes before he made th...

Re: URGENT crack prevention advice needed!
Have you priced those things? Well, yes, I have priced them. And you are right. They do show up on Craigslist now and then. Really! But even then they aren't exactly cheap. I'm still looking for one that's a proper size for my purposes. :) But I digress ... and I also probably confused t...

Re: URGENT crack prevention advice needed!
but that kind of patience is way beyond my scope  You, and me as well. And I think that is the reason why some cane flute makers will flame/heat temper their material before they make the flute. The best tempering methods will evenly reduce the moisture and crystalize the sugars so that the tr...

Re: Best hard-blowing high D whisle for $100
Hard blowing, soft blowing. It's all relative. Right? There may be some confusion in using the term "hard blower". Some call it "back pressure" but it is not the same as that term would mean in a flute. It does cross paths with what others call "push" though. I get the ...

Re: Whistle sighting on the Late Show
ust watching Friday's show and the sax player was playing a whistle that looked very much like my Dixon, with the dull brass finish and long black head. Right!  I had a giggle the first time I heard the whistle on the Late Show a few weeks back. There wasn't much to see then, n...

Re: URGENT crack prevention advice needed!
I do, as a matter of fact, indeed use these for my flute in winter: 2 guitar-sized for the head and body, 1 thinner fiddle-sized for the foot. Yeah, I have a bunch of those Damp-it humidifiers for my stringed instruments and I have used them in flutes. The violin/mandolin size works for flutes IMO....

Re: URGENT crack prevention advice needed!
I guess the reason for the last crack was that it’s imported to Norway from the very humid Philippines. Maybe also the material for the whistle is not stored long enough before the whistle was made. I fear the same tensions is in the new whistle. The whistle wants to be in the Philippines. It is ac...

Re: Looking for info on less breathy flutes, Taper/Conical etc
From making PVC flutes, G and concert D, the size of the embouchure does impact the loudness and need for air. The bigger the hole, more air. Louder, yes, generally. More air, no, no, no! The bigger hole usually just offers you a wider blowing edge to hit. The larger area allows more space for the ...
