Re: Cotter vs Watson flutes

First, why are you only interested in these two? We are fortunate these days to have a big range of fantastic flute makers out there. For information, I own flutes by Patrick Olwell, Michael Grinter, David Copley, and Martin Doyle. All of them are outstanding, and on all of them I sound like myself ...

Re: FS Sam Murray Flute with pics and clips

This is the Sam Murray flute I bought in June 2008 from a lady in El Cerrito, Calif. It was 8 months old and cost 1300 USD. I still have the case, but in July , 2011 I left the flute at Sam's workshop in Galway for Sam to repair a barrel crack and never saw the flute again. Weird to see this thread...

Re: Solas need our help

Solas still need to raise $1,500 in the next 37 hours or the Kickstarter will fail. So, if any of you do feel like supporting a great project by a great band, do considering pledging $15, for which you'll receive a copy of Solas' 20th anniversary album and the knowledge that you helped it get made. ...

Re: Solas need our help

Folks - we're talking about Solas here. They're putting together this album as a labor of love, to do something truly special to celebrate 20 years as a band. If you feel moved to support them do, and if you prefer not to then don't. It's completely up to you. For me, and for many others, Solas has ...

Solas need our help

[Moderator approved. - Mod] Solas, the legendary Irish traditional music band, need our help. To celebrate 20 years together they hope to bring together all the members of Solas, past and present , to record an album of all-new material, the first time the original lineup of Solas will be recorded ...

Re: flute volume

The flutes I've kept at this point are my Olwells (ke...

Re: Popular tunes in Ireland

The musicians at some of these gatherings were mostly people in late middle age who clearly had not learned the music at their mother's knee or as teenagers, but quite recently, and using the same resources as people anywhere in the world - notably the Fionn Sessiun books, because they were playing...

Re: Popular tunes in Ireland

I'm planning a trip to Ireland summer 2016 so I have a little more than a year to work on some tunes. I doubt I'll be brave enough to attempt to sit in anywhere but I thought I'd ask a question here. For easy to medium pieces, what are your suggestions for a handful of tunes to have well under my b...

Re: CP: "The Keymaster" now online!

Jem, I just want to let you know how much I loved this film. It was simply beautiful. Thank you for making it. One question - do you have any more footage from the scene with Brian Finnegan playing? I'd love to see/hear him playing the entire tune. The arrangement with the piano is simply beautiful....

Re: That tucked-in position

...there may be a legitimate reason for initially preferring this "bad" posture, and it may be physically uncomfortable and seemingly unergonomic (for your body) to play in a "good" posture, but the real fix is probably to address the underlying problem that makes a good posture...

Re: That tucked-in position

It is easier to consistently zone in on a heavy low D. Maybe it feels that way for you now, but there's no logical reason why this should be the case moving forward. If you can play a strong low D "tucked" you should be able to play a strong low D "untucked", and if you can't th...

Re: That tucked-in position

This is silly. There are outstanding players who play "tucked" and equally many, if not substantially more, who play in a natural, ergonomic position. Clearly it's possible to play Irish flute well in both positions. The relevant questions are really: - Is there any advantage to playing &q...
