Well the Rowsome pipes might not be very good, but they were the best i could afford. As far as the E hole is concerned surely off the knee would vent just fine through the bottom of the chanter. I've heard Heather Clarke's wide bore played fine off the knee, but then again reeds sometimes do not al...

Also note the typical Howard tiny e hole. No problem if you never plan to play an off the knee E. It does say its an older model. My experience of Howard chanters is that they play a perfect E off the knee. If this one has a problem Im sure the maker would endevour to rectify it. I can't understand...

Re: Equal Temp vs. just - a chart anyone?

Just looking for a chart showing the uilleann scale and how it differs against equal temperment. In particular, I'd like to find the difference in +/- cents for each note of the scale. I assume the octaves would be the same (or at least should be...let's assume perfect reed/chanter conditions here)...

Re: new piper old man

I just wish I'd started sooner. If it takes 10 or 12 years to be a good piper, I'll be 72. Ha. that'll be something to see. the saying is "7 years learning, 7 years practicing and 7 years playing before your a piper" Good luck and keep at it I say. Try and get out to a session and make so...

the key shapes very similar but they are not now shoulder mounted, but rather with silver key mounts. The chanter looks like his rowsom chanter, but it could be his old kenna. The reg keys that i have seen are also perfectly in line, unlike the ones in the pic. I suspect Finbar has "adjusted&qu...

Had quite i lot of contact with john addison in the mid 80's and he was (is)a great northumbrian smallpipe maker. He only made a few uilleann sets as far as I know and only for his other customers by request, but they played quite well and were all easily reedable. I always found him a realy nice ma...

elder makes great drone reeds, especially in flat pitch sets. I first came across them in the museum in keighley in a coyne set. dont know how old they were but they looked ancient. After seeing these i tried some in my B set and the difference was amazing once i got the knack of making them

Seamus Ennis obtained some of these third-octave notes (E, F#) by playing a high D and opening various keys. Dither around on your own chanter to find out what works for your own hideous squeals. :boggle: well i must admit that on my chanters it does sound like a hideous squeek, but i was in a pub ...

Re: poll

I guess from reading the "71 page Fingering chart for Howard Chanters" thread, I can be presumptuous and not put anyone down for Brian Howard as top pipe maker. Neil Never presume! Have you heard a Howard set ? There are a few round here and I think they sound great. Quite frankly if I ha...
