CP: Whorfin Woods December 2022

I've updated the current stock on my web page: https://whorfinwoods.com/featured-one/ There are some seconds, but I've also listed the current batch of d's -- there's plenty of stock at the IFS, and so I figure till late in the month I'll sell some firsts myself. Send email to shorfinwoods (at) gmai...

Re: "What's the loudest flute I can get?"

What does it mean? "It's not the flute, it's the player" seems to be the conclusion. That's certainly what I draw from your test, but it's a little more subtle than that. I'm sure if I did the same test, I'd get the same results. One of my teachers said to me many years ago, "You hav...

Re: Slow Key-Easy Fix?

I've had a key get tight from a little movement in the wood. With the permission of the maker, I sanded just a little off the inside of the blocks and it was fine after that.

Re: Shipping to Europe

This was an outlier - not at all typical. Must have gotten lost or hijacked on a train: I shipped a Wooden Flute Obsession CD (1 volume only) to Finland on March 16 by USPS International First Class. Just cleared Miami yesterday. 5-6 weeks and still hasn't left the U.S. I sent a whistle to someplac...

Re: Comparison of High D Whistle Bores

Wow, that one in the middle is ridiculous. Knowing the rest are d's, I'd think it was a G. The Hermit Hill has a wall so thick I'd think they'd need to undercut the tone holes.

Re: Comparison of High D Whistle Bores

I tend to think of something much less than 1/2" or 12.7 mm as narrow bore and anything much above that as wide bore. The Burke wide-bore brass is around 14.3 mm (9/16), and that's about as wide a bore as I think is practical for a d whistle. 16 mm for a d whistle is well beyond anything I'd th...

Re: Key leaf spring repair

Temporary repair: put a rubber band around the flute body between the key pivot and the hole it goes to. Experiment with different rubber bands and how many times to wrap them around. I used that for a couple of years on an antique no-name flute and it worked great. I hope you're able to stay safe.

Re: Trees

Algarve is a special place, an unusual and mysterious place also. I would not know where to start, it is sort of abandoned in modern terms, some tourism but not much, with its boom bust that we saw in southern europe. I used to live in Spain before, but the country was getting overrun in the touris...

Around here, it is the emerald ash borer that is devastating the ash trees. https://inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com/photos/110639577/medium.jpeg We are fortunate in having other native trees that still thrive here, like black walnut, in the foreground, and eastern red cedar, in the backgroun...

Re: Best High-End Whistles these days?

I'm with Loren on two points: O'Riordans are love-em-or-hate-em whistles. I got some directly from Pat. They were wonderful for what they were, but I found the sound too pure and too loud. As a whistle maker (and Loren has been a recorder maker), I can say for sure, they are not a simple design. A l...

Re: reaming

For years, I've been buying reamers from Gammons in Manchester, CT*. The cost has been well-worth the experience it gave me. My preferred design has a right-hand cut and left-hand spiral (RHC, LHS). Cobalt-steel costs a little more (and takes a little longer to deliver) but it lasts much longer; fo...
