Re: Suggestions for irish flute music played in jazzy style?

Keep forgetting to mention these guys on threads like this; did so on the session the other day. Anyway Ensemble Eriu is one of my favorite trad bands of recent years; only so much flute content (the bass player plays some flute and whistle) but definitely jazzy (like full on clarinet solos and eve...

Re: When the Maker Suggests an Easy Repair You can Do...

I never ever would have done anything like this if John hadn't suggested it. Truth be told I had encountered this problem on this key here and there over the years it just finally got to a point where something had to be done. Spending the, at least, $120 for shipping both ways and waiting around fo...

When the Maker Suggests an Easy Repair You can Do...

The long f key on my J. Gallagher flute started staying in the open position after heavy use a couple of months ago. Later in the week that it started, or maybe it was the next week, John happened to be in Portland and he came out to a session I'd be at pretty often. I asked him about this and he to...

Niall Keegan comes to mind seems like music Scotland is the only place to get his Don't Touch the Elk album.

Sylvain Barou would be another player to listen to.

CP: Free Digital Solo EP Lonesome City Coming 4/28

Just a quick post to say that I have a new recording coming later this month. It is mostly songs with bouzouki accompaniment (and a few flute solos). You can hear the title track Lonesome City on my soundcloud. As the topic says it will be out 4/28 and will only be available as a free (or name your ...

CP: Free Digital Solo EP Lonesome City Coming 4/28

Just a quick post to say that I have a new recording coming later this month. It is mostly songs with bouzouki, but there are some flute solos so I am posting this here. Just posted a sample flute track: Patsy Hanley's/The Boys of Ballisodare/The Crosses of Annagh (reels) onto my soundcloud. As the ...

Re: Bamboo flute case

There's some cloth bags here at Sunreed made for the purpose, I keep my Olwell bamboo G rolled up in a cloth napkin. Of course the other suggestions work well.

Hey Steve, would you mind forwarding me that email too? The address linked on the email button here works.

Re: Flute playing a half step flat

That's just my own approach to it, no doubt others will have a different opinion. There is nothing wrong with adding more thread at times but if the tenons feel snug after playing for a while then I don't think there is a need to mess with it. My own take is why try to fix a problem that is going to...

Re: Flute playing a half step flat

I was typing up a response but paddler covered some of it. Since you are a beginning player I'd be nearly certain, as much as possible without sitting in the same room with you, that the tuning issue originates with you. Is it possible that you haven't developed enough breath support to get the flut...

Re: Matt Molloy new album

Agreed; that version of 'The Navvy on the Line' really sticks out to me. Haven't heard the album so this is just a guess, but considering that it's coming after "Twilight in Portroe" it's probably "Paddy Jim Frank's" AKA "Pride of Cluinte" -- that would be an old Peter...

Re: Matt Molloy new album

To para-pharse the sleeve notes they got them from Brian Rooney who heard them on a Jimmy Shand recording on a jukebox in London. I like their take, or perhaps it's Brian Rooney's take, on those tunes but they play them almost like jigs so be prepared for that!
