Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

You may be right particularly in regard to drones, maybe regs too.

I don't think you have to worry about a B set being re-scaled from a concert set. Nobody's making "wide-bore" B chanters . . . or is someone?

Jim, I don't know how bent out of shape you should get thinking about this particular problem. The discussion is +/- useful from the sense that it implies that we all play with the tonehones in the same spot. I know that I don't do that because my wrists don't have the best flexibility in the world,...

Short.

Uilleann chanters, FWIW, have only the short key. Silly long F.

People who like the long F are just compensating for . . .

Wow, what interesting ideas. Thanks.

I'll try something like that tonight and report back. (Like that == steam of some kind.)

Flutemaker question: the case of the wee dent

So, this isn't specifically a flute question, but given the fact that there are a lot of people around with a lot of woodworking experience. . . I dropped a decorative piece of soft timber and didn't break it, but I did manage to put a small dent on an edge. Not a huge deal but it bothers me a littl...

The great thing about the pipes is that you wouldn't have to choose a tuning; rather, you can rely on the ear to pick pitches consonant with the drones. Concessions to the octaves will have to be made. I appreciate your posting the pitches, though. I think trying to get a concertina to play in tune ...

That's sort of why, despite the fact that he asked for pitches, I suggested tuning by ear to a drone. It's just not right to sit with a strobe tuner or whatever when you're making an instrument, I don't think. Get the tonic right and tune the rest by ear; it'll sound right. What do these "publi...

I might humbly suggest that the maker make the concertina with a D drone and tune all the notes to the drone by ear. He could use a tuner for D (assuming you want the concertina to play with a concert set) and then the rest of the notes would "work" if they worked with the concertina's dro...

The other thing to remember, by way of keeping your sanity, is that none of these rules/regulations guarantee that you can get your pipes on board . All they can do is say that you can get an instrument through a security checkpoint. Local airport security (at the first hurdle) and the airline itsel...

Hey, thanks for the work! That's interesting.

I'll come clean and say that one of the reasons I got interested in the Crowley tutor is that I'm waiting on delivery of a concert 3/4 set by Michael Hubbert, and I know the foundation of his design is his own Crowley set.

Many (if not most) uilleann pipers blow up the bag with the drone switch off, then once they're up to pressure they turn on the drones. I don't know that I've ever seen anyone "strike in" a set of uilleanns; the drones behave a little differently from highland drones and don't really need ...

Yeah, chanters don't exactly chant, either, but we call them that. That part of the drone has just been called the resonator. And regulators don't regulate anything. The only aptly named parts are bag, bellows, and drones.

;)
