Scottish Session @ The Anchor Pub - Everett WA USA

This is a brand new session and is in a trial phase. We had the first one and they've asked us back for a couple more. The Anchor Pub is trying to attract a more low key clientele and is doing so by hosting more acoustic music. This session has a Scottish focus. Strathspey players are quite welcome....

Re: Am I just 'traditionally style-less?'

Apology accepted, Nate. I can see where a saying like that can come across as rather overstuffed but it really boils down to what you said about just playing the (bleep) tunes. When you want to learn a style, don't just copy the phrasing or the ornamentation or whatever. Get that feeling of the styl...

Re: Am I just 'traditionally style-less?'

While we're slinging around quotes, let me share one that I can't remember verbatim but I'll try and reproduce as faithfully as I can. Do not follow the same path as the master. Seek the same source and you will find mastery ... or something like that. Oh sh*t. Try saying that one done the pub. I h...

Re: Am I just 'traditionally style-less?'

The first few pages of this thread reminded me why I haven't been here for a few months. Then Julia Delaney's posts reminded why I used to like coming hear so much. So, now that we're sort of back to some semblance of reasonable discussion (I hope), Az brought up a good point to Arbo. Who's playing ...

Re: new synth chanter reed

Overall the sound in the clip is pretty impressive. You can still hear the plastic in the topmost notes, especially High A and also in G gracenotes. I wonder if maybe the pressure of the GHB pipe chanter pushes the limits of plastic's acoustic qualities. Hearing one in person would obviously be bett...

Re: Question for the lefthanded piper... (me)

There's a tradition of right-shoulder playing on South Uist and a strong connection between South Uist and the Strathclyde Police. That band inevitably has one or two with drones on the right shoulder.

Re: Speed on a metronome

120 bpm on a reel should have 1 beat = 2 quarter notes. But I agree it's too fast. Metronome use is not so much for increasing tempo but controlling it. It's also good for rhythm control too and for playing to an external reference. If you find the tune and/or tempo getting away from you, even when ...

Re: Galician smallpipe?

Davy's suggestion is apt for getting something that pops up into the higher range.

I've read that Pete Sutherland and Julian Goodacre have collaborated on some open-fingering smallpipes.

Mike MacHarg is a good reference too.
