How to go from bottom D to high G?

I asked the same question on the FB UP site.... probably the same people here? Anyhow I can easily jump octaves with my playing. I had a bit of trouble going from a lower octave notes to high A. But I figured that out with a rapid opening of some of the lower notes fast enough that you really dont h...

since i got mine at the Seattle tionol i suspect that if you get in contact with someone at the pipers club there that they can help you.

Grace note recordings?

Att he NW Tionol in Seattle i bought a book "The Tutor" by Denis Brooks. A great investment on my part. There is a really good section on ornamentation with lot of technique, some of which i have never heard of. Cuts, pats, rolls, clipping, long rolls, broken long rolls, close rolls, shake...

Re: Phew! That was scary!

I have heard it said that if a reed is made in a dry environment that it can play in a dry environment.... Which makes some sense.... I am not sure where your reed was made but have you tried a humidifier in your room.... Or turn the shower for a bit and then off.... and play in your bathroom? I kno...

Re: v.pipes Uilleann F.S with case

I got one of these about a year ago. There was no lead issue so i think they maintain some stock. I had an issue with the first one but they quickly (as fast as Mail to Spain) sent one back to me. No issues since. Its not a substitute for real pipes but when you are traveling, or you cant control a ...

Re: B chanter reed crow pitch?

Thanks Geoff.... Exactly the info i was looking for. Interestingly enough my B chanter with my reed plays both Bottom and back D at about 40cents flat of B. i was going to trim it more but maybe I am there except for a bit of sanding to ease the playing.

Thanks.

His run from F# to G. so what is typical for B chanters? and if get a crow there will the chanter be abo...

Could not hear myself...typical?

i am at the NW Seattle Tionol and I am in the beginners group. With the tutor there are 4 of us in a tiny room. We are playing a simple tune and we all are getting notes right. But the oddest thing is that while i am playing.... I cannot hear my chanter? If i make a mistake i hear it but it was an o...

Re: Best way to practice for beginners? Mini Miracle!

I took several of the ideas posted so far. Thank you very much. I start now by playing random notes. Try to repeat them. Play whatever comes into my head. It actually is kind of empowering. But here comes the mini-miracle. I have put together a tune book of the tunes that I play. And I usually play ...

Best way to practice for beginners?

Is there any general concensus on the best way to practice. I used to sit down and play about 6 different tunes by notes and add one every couple of months. I noticed in the last couple of months that i was not making much progress so now I play only 1 or 2 tunes and do not move on till I can play t...

Re: What affects pre-scrape reed aperture the most?

Years ago, I saw Paddy Keenan pull out a reed and take it apart in a few seconds. This was for a small group of us and he explained a bit about how he made reeds - this reed looked like it was loosely tied with fuzzy pink yarn. The slips were so wide and rough looking that I wondered if he'd shaped...

Re: What affects pre-scrape reed aperture the most?

AlanB.... good ideas. I was looking for the lazy approach by asking pipers who may have made a 1000 of these damn things. Over my life I was able to get really good at flying jets, tesing rocket engines, sailing a boat, managing a team of engineers........ With each of those things, after a while yo...

What affects pre-scrape reed aperture the most?

I think I know that the following affect pre-scrape reed aperture and this would be my guess in a rank order of most to least affect (not including bridle affects): 1. Sanding block diameter 2. Staple eye height 2. Tail gouge 3. Staple insertion distance into reed 3. Slip thickness prior to halving ...

Who would have guessed that my question about rolled taper staples would have evolved into a discussion on the C melody sax?
