new twist on stop key question
thanks for everyone's responses! One thing that's changed since I've asked it, is that I'm seriously considering getting a half set from the get go. I just heard a set recently with the drones, and thought "I just have to get the drones at the same time". Might be sheer lunacy, but there i...

Advice needed on stop key
Just curious about what pipers think about the necessity of getting a stop key added to a chanter, in order to be able to shut off the air supply for the chanter when fine tuning drones and/or regulators. They cost several hundred more to add to an order, but if they'll make things more manageable, ...

Any experience with Michael Hubbert?
I'm looking for any experience with a maker. I heard about Michael Hubbert from another Uilleann Pipes board member.
Anyhow, he was in Southern California for many years, and has recently (if I have this correct) moved to N. California.
Any information would be great!

Koehler and Quinn?
Someone recommended Koehler and Quinn. I couldn't find much of anything about them on the web. Are they taking orders, or has their waiting list been put on hold?

Oh good. I was hoping it wasn't completely out there, but still within the bounds of acceptable lunacy... Now I get to agonize over whether to go with a flat set for sure, and, if so, which pitch. I'll look at the recent thread that deals with this. And then, choosing a maker that doesn't have a 10 ...

Starting pipes with a flat set?
Is this an insane idea? Just wondering. I know that a big thing is that most (if not all) instructional material is in D, and that if you play with others you need to be in tune. Are flat sets really just for playing solo? And is it still a crazy idea to consider them for a first set? still wanderin...

Thanks for the great feedback, everyone. Lots of choices, though the Burke seems to stand out as the favorite. Would you suggest the Brass Narrow Bore D, or the regular bore D? I know that the narrow bore is quieter, but not sure if that affects the overall sound quality in a negative way (other tha...

Sweetheart Wood Whistle?
Has anyone heard anything about this whistle? It's on the Song of the Sea website. It says "Sweetheart Wood Whistle, in "D" Made by Ralph Sweet. Two piece, tunable. " It lists for $135. I wouldn't necessarily mind wood, though I imagine it could be more affected by temperature an...

Suggestions for next whistle?
I have a Clarke D original whistle, and am thinking of upgrading. The Clarke has been good, but is very breathy, and transitioning to the upper octaves is not always very smooth. What's a good medium-priced whistle? I'd like to stay with the D whistle. Should I get a tunable whistle, or does it make...

Upper notes in 2nd octave--Ouch!!
I was learning the tune Si Beag Si Mor, on Cathall McConnell's CD tutor, which has lots of upper notes in the second octave. Although they were shrill, didn't seem damaging at the tme. I knew that third octave notes are supposed to be cause for concern in terms of hearing damage, but 2nd octave seem...

Who is the piper on this recording?
There is an album called "The Bagpipe in Europe: Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Galacia." I'm not sure what year it was put out, but it's only on a record, so it was from the pre-cassette tape era. Maybe 1960's sometime. Anyhow, at the beginning are 3 Irish tunes--Jig -- Turlough Carolan -- ...
