Re: Consumer report

Future's already here. I watched some program on a "health" (?) channel a month or two ago about men who have girlfriends who are made of some sort of squishy person-feeling stuff. They put makeup on them, dress them, talk to them, have private moments. After a few years they have to be sh...

Re: Best Version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"

I thought every poll was required to have "none of the above" as a choice. This one doesn't, so I can't vote. It's a horrible song.

An Ode to Fall on the Theme of Scrub Jays Scrub jays are stashing peanuts away Preparing for snow which could come any day. I think I have them trained to take from my hand But they know better--I must obey their command. "Watch this," they tell other jays and land by the door Knowing whe...

Fearless Leader, I'm glad your only injury was apparently the hubcap! Holy crap!

Cops think they're really funny--sometimes they actually are. (I can say that since my father, brother, and uncle are currently or were cops for many, many years.)

Re: Ken Burns' National Parks Documentary

Ah, for the good old days. When I was a kid (into my teens), the road through Zion National Park was the only road to get from the town where I lived (Kanab) to the larger town on the other side of the park (St. George). You'd go to the entrance station and say, "Going through to St. George&quo...

Re: Ken Burns' National Parks Documentary

I'm finding it fascinating. I had no idea Mather came up with using a landscape designer for the roads in all the parks--no wonder many of them are so fantastic! They mentioned the mile-long tunnel in Zion Park but not the "windows" in the tunnel. I'm wondering if those were Mather's idea....

Re: Ken Burns' National Parks Documentary

Walden, what do you mean "Civil War documentary format?" Maybe it's more a Ken Burns format?

I swear when I first saw your avatar, Walden, I thought it was Fred Astaire in a wig!!

Re: Ken Burns' National Parks Documentary

I watched the second part and, as usual with a Ken Burns project, am very impressed. I'll certainly be watching the rest of it. Fascinating to me to hear about the thinking that was behind some of the parks. Interesting also to note that as a people we haven't changed one bit--our first inclination ...

Re: Appalachian Clogging?

Never heard of clogging as music - only the "dancing." I've seen some downright silly clogging and it's ruined me on it forever. Can't stand to watch it.

Nice review. I live in one of the most ITM-less areas in the U.S., I believe, and wish we could hear more stuff like this.

Re: Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill, Ogden, UT 9/19

In a moment of middle-age crisis, I dragged my daughter from Utah to California to see them! Had a great time, by the way, meeting some fellow Chiffers. The venue where we saw Hayes/Cahill was very small and had a nice intimate feel to it. Unfortunately, the place they're going to be in Ogden is a l...

Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill in Concert Returning to Ogden to open the 2009-10 Cultural Affairs season are Irish fiddle virtuoso Martin Hayes and American guitarist Dennis Cahill. The duo has garnered international renown...
