Re: Buying a low whistle

Yes, but it's not always just an individual's perception involved-often just comparing one Copeland or one Reviol or one....fill in the blank...as being the norm for that brand can be too small a sampling of a maker's whistles over time to think most were like that one or two we've played. Whistles ...

Re: Buying a low whistle

Yes I've had a few Reyburn Low Ds pass through my hands and they've all been amongst the loudest Low Ds , similar to Burkes and MKs. Both the old Reyburns with the fat Maple head, and the newer ones with the polypenco head, have a unique NAF-like tone which I find very appealing. IMHO the MK and th...

Re: CP: Wooden Flute Obsession CD bundle SALE

Folks, this comes to $7 a CD, including shipping! No better bargain around for hearing what you love to listen to, if you don't already have them. Wish I had that deal when I was starting out, but glad to see Kevin is making this available now to all who might be wondering-don't wonder, just buy and...

Re: Buying a low whistle

Since my latest purchase and playing of Ronaldo's prototype all brass low D whistle, it has reminded me of how I really liked and appreciated his quieter, standard bore Maple head low D that I had before. It has many of the same attributes, and what I appreciate in a low whistle that is perfect for ...

Re: CP SPECIAL OFFERS

Maybe Carol meant how does the prototype all brass compare to your current delrin head/brass tube models? I can't answer that, because I don't have one of Ronaldo's current models, but the prototype may be a little quieter than the one I played on the tour. I don't believe it was designed as a sessi...

Re: CP SPECIAL OFFERS

Ronaldo has some pretty nice deals here! If you haven't checked them out yet, do so. There's something very nice (look, tone, lip-feel) about the Maple headed whistles and brass-and they aren't being made any longer. These are kind of special too, since they are updated versions, and also some rarer...

Re: Like your metal whistle shiny?

Thanks Ted (and Kevin), sounds like it could be a nice solution to the tarnishing brass problem. Interesting-the polymer coating seems a good alternative to continual polishing (or not) and build-up of corrosion.

Next time I get a brass whistle, I will probably give it a go! Hope it's soon! ; )

Re: Flipping Sindt Whistles

Sure, this all depends on your own perspective, and what you are comfortable with when selling popular musical instruments that are handmade, or even just very hard to find. And yes, if a maker offers his at a reasonable price to make them more available to all, and it can be resold for double, trip...

Re: Kerry Optima Review

Nice review AG! All true for me as well-really nice whistle for little money, especially if you get it on sale. Come on Phil, time for another sale!!! ; ) Or even if not-it plays really well, for beginners and more experienced players alike. Just listen to how Phil makes it sound, and you'll have an...

Re: Buying a low whistle

... The whistle as we presently know it does not need to change. It's doing fine as it is. Feadoggie How true! Often, simple is better. If it's not broken, don't fix it just because it can be done. I don't see the need for keys either, myself (or extra holes either!). Other than maybe keys for the ...

Re: Buying a low whistle

Hi Maurice, Yes, I meant the lower tube, when talking about the brass barrels. It does make for a heavier whistle, but not that bad, and worth the extra weight for the nice mellow tone it brings along with it. Still enjoying my Reviol Low D/C that I now have back again-really beautiful open tone and...

Re: Buying a low whistle

I used to have a Chieftain Gold Low D, a very heavy thing indeed! I had to use a strap to support it. To me, its low range was OK/meh but the 2nd octave was wonderful, perhaps the best 2nd octave of any Low D I've tried. Hard to put into words its buttery dark smoothness. Yes about all the various ...

Re: Buying a low whistle

Heh, that's a good estimation of the Chieftain Gold, Lempriere as you said; "a hefty old lump"!!! It surely was, but it had a very nice, solid (good presence) but mellow tone. It sounded great in a room with good acoustsics (no deadening sound absorbers). Pretty nice otherwise too-more mel...

Re: least-prone to clogging low Ds

The only ones that have no clogging issues for me are the plastic head Kerry Optima, or the Susato. Any all aluminum low whistle has had issues for me (without toothpaste treatment-haven't tried it yet). But most with shallower windways usually have more problems, as others have suggested, that the ...

Re: Buying a low whistle

Hello SpiderJames, from one spider to another...! In what kind of environment will you be playing this? Are you in a band or group, and do you use microphones? Or do you play solo, in your home, like me, or do you play in sessions? There are some quieter Low D's and some louder, but most are not eas...
