One of my goals going into a session is to not play too much. I like to listen, and that's part of the reason I go. I don't know how this relates to the jams you go to; listening without playing may or may not be a goal there. Anyhow, it's my theory that the difference between a good session and a b...

The banning of the War Pipes in Scotland after the Jacobite rebellions certainly influenced the development of the Border pipes in the C18th as well. I've seen a number of claims that the "banning" was a myth, e.g. this review of Traditional Gaelic Bagpiping, 1745-1945 In his pursuit for ...

I'm sure if you sent him one he'd be happy to update the photos. :) Come to think of it, why burden Daniel when he's already done so much. Send one to me and I'll take care of it! :D

I didn't think the Hispanic man seemed artificial or just stuck in for political purposes---I had not heard about the protests. I thought he added a lot to the program when he talked about not fitting in at first and then how gradually everyone got to know each other and then relied on each other. ...

The problem is that the filenames are wrong in the RSS feed. The actual filenames have a space in them, the RSS feed filenames don't. My wild guess is that this works OK on some computers or media players which remove the space, but not on others. The only fix is for them to correct their feed (or t...

I'm not sure why you'd want to. I think it would do for ITM what Kenny G did for Jazz. IMHO breathing is an interesting ornament. It would be like not using cuts or rolls, just to show that you could.

These days it's Idir Deighric 'Gus Breo'. Simple, but lovely on whistle or flute.

Rhythm is the construct behind dance steps; to say that rhythms don't define, say, a polka, is to say that changing the rhythm of a polka is fine, even though you can no longer polka to it. True enough, but note that this emphatically isn't what I said. It's close to the opposite, in fact. Rephrasi...

[...] since most tunes are defined by their rhythm patterns [...] Is that really true? This is dance music, and it seems to me that "most tunes are defined by" which dance you do when they're played. While that obviously has some effect on the rhythm, I'm not sure it really determines swi...

Perhaps I should have said this earlier, but the reason I began thinking about this issue is that I want to describe the difference to a band that doesn't realize that they aren't playing the tunes correctly. In the unlikely event that they're receptive to such criticism, you could give them a good...
