Re: A new flute model
There's a pressure sensitive lump for each finger and a velocity sensitive detector thing for the air you're blowing. So it can be set up to detect not just what fingering you're using but also how hard you're pushing each finger, and how hard you're blowing. So in theory it could be set up to play ...

A new flute model
A friend at work has just made a new flute so here's a photo of it next to my 1832 Hill/Monzani. http://8.media.tumblr.com/Ej6uHub0Oli73a2685wBqHsoo1_400.jpg Now I'm not too sure that it'll be that good for ITM as all those electronic bits might not take kindly to having Guinness spilled on them. Ch...

Re: Regarding 'A Flute Maker/Player Dyad'
Or then again it might be just dribble, like this "essay"."As the condensation which forms on the inside of a flute after playing could be considered the distilled essence of the flute player..."

Re: new flutes... old flutes....
Henke am I right in guessing that the A is too high in pitch and the F# too low? Why not use wax in the leading edge of the L3 hole to lower the pitch of the A and use the F natural key on any long F#s to bring the pitch up on those notes. Another option which might help with the A is to not push th...

Re: Alterations to a flute by others than the maker
A flute is just a bit of wood with holes in it. It's the owner who has the sole right to decide what to do with it, and if the maker wanted to retain some control over it they shouldn't have sold it.
As for selling something and claiming it's something else that's a different matter.

Re: FAQ help: Second octave D fingering - why vent?
I've got something further to add regarding the difference in sound between a vented and non-vented 2nd octave D. It occurred to me when alternating between them that what I was hearing as a difference was the fact that the vented note was louder in my right ear (but not my left) because of the now ...

AFAIK it's probably better to use a drone tuned to the 5th rather than the tonic.Cork wrote:Actually, it's really not necessary for a drone to be tuned to the tonic.

Re: FAQ help: Second octave D fingering - why vent?
Graeme - that is certainly interesting about Chris Norman. What rationale did he give? I'm not sure I remember correctly but it could have been due to the fact that you get a very different effect with ornamentation on a vented 2nd octave D compared to a non-vented one. Chris certainly doesn't alwa...

Re: FAQ help: Second octave D fingering - why vent?
I found it interesting that at Boxwood NZ a few weeks ago, Chris Norman was getting us to use the unvented fingering xxx xxx for 2nd octave D.

Re: Could I ask...
Buy one of them! If you can try them out buy the one you like best. If not toss a coin? If you've got very small hands then the right hand finger stretch on the GLP is less than the R-refined so that might be a point in favour of the GLP.irishrosa82 wrote: Any opinions on my particular situation?

Another alternative is molded silicon pads which I've used successfully.

Re: water under the crown means what?
The water will have got there because although the stopper isn't leaking much it is leaking very slightly. I've just done the leak test Jem described on my flute and the suction was still holding strong after 90 seconds.

Re: homemade pvc with tuning wedge
Actually I think we need to compare four things, namely playing without trying much to play in tune, and playing while doing your best to play in tune; both with and without the wedge. Don't plead lack of time - a few minutes recording 4 mp3 files is all that's needed. Just fire the mp3s off to Terr...
