Re: Help with the Belfast polka, please

If I had to play this tune :boggle: instead of "tuka-tuka", I would use "tuddle-duddle". The effect is far less staccato and, I would go so far as to say, could take you out of the silly category.

Re: how to play the rolls correctly?

I'd say this is all about the difference between rolls played "straight" and played "swung". Brother Steve never got around to addressing this difference but as Tom pointed out, straight or square is a good place to start. To me, swinging a long roll in a tune whose underlying rh...

Re: Beginner following some, but not all, advice

Next topic: I'm playing tunes from the Ochs book that go up to the second octave B, and that note is *piercing* on the high D whistle. I haven't learned to play the higher notes with a sweet sound yet. It's far from angelic. Maybe an A or G whistle would sound better during the learning process, an...

Re: The Mary Bergin Whistle Tutor

Thanks squidgirl ! It's a good point concerning author reputation... Finally I decide to learn from Mary Bergin's book first. It can only give me a strong basis. oups sorry about the tongue mistake lol Now corrected (but not the quoted one). Nicolas [apologies for joining in late as usual] ...

Re: Paolo Soprani G/C 21 button 3 Voice?

I think you did well not to buy it. I can understand the attraction for an uilleann piper of an instrument that you can just take out of its case, play, and put back into its case with no tuning or faffing around with reeds. And have somebody else tune it every 4 or 5 years - what's not to like? But...

Re: Cutting Question

... do you play the G and then put fingers down to play the E, like you might in a grace note situation... I don't think I would ever do that, even if I were just gracing a single E and sounding the grace note first. I think all my fingers would be in position before lifting a finger to sound the g...

Re: Two Questions

There aren't any rules and I see nothing wrong with tonguing three consecutive notes of the same pitch - provided that in doing so you get the rhythm right . Traditional players often tongue two consecutive notes, not necessarily ones of the same pitch. The thing to understand here is that tonguing ...

Re: New Irtrad band - would appreciate comments and criticis

Welcome. Two things straight off: ditch the sheet music; and ditch the set bowing patterns. Go to Ireland and really listen to good trad players, and watch them closely to see how they're producing the sounds they do. Did you have a particular reason for wanting to make sure that our first-time pos...

Re: Do you have a Freeman Generation Bb... or other?

I have a Freeman Bb, a Sindt Bb and some ridge/dimple Generation Bb models - 3 or 4 of them lying about somewhere. The Sindt is very nice and will presumably last a century or two. It's a wee bit bland compared to the others but still very good. (Curiously, with the A tube on it doesn't sound so goo...

Re: Do you really need an Eb

I have wondered whether Generation developed their Eb whistle before the D whistle, since Eb would have been a useful key for playing with bands, the Sally Army, etc. Hence the bore diameter is optimized for the key of Eb whistle, and should perhaps have been a fraction wider for the D whistle. This...

Re: New to the world of the tin whistle

You can "mute" your whistle you know. There are various methods, including the one described here: http://www.rogermillington.com/siamsa/brosteve/quicktips.html#bluetack Edited to add: welcome to the madness, no you are not silly, please keep at it. You'll find places to play without distu...

Mr.Gumby wrote:The brightness of the e flat and it's ease of handling make it a joy to play. It's a whistle that's like a sunny spring day, full of life and without worry.
My sentiments entirely (expressed better than I would have bothered to).
