Re: Whistle making questions (undercutting and joints)
I 1) One source states that undercutting a tone hole on the upper side (towards mouthpiece) raising the second octave pitch. Another source says undercutting on the upper side raises the pitch for both octaves while undercutting the lower side raises the pitch for the upper octave. Is one of these ...

Re: Advice Needed on Teaching
I just don't know what charge. I had initially thought that $100 per person for the course was fair. That breaks down to $12.50 per person per week. But now I am not so sure. A friend thought maybe $8/week per person, but that seems a bit low.... How much do you care about the money? If the income ...

Michael, if you're choosing between tunes, you might want to consider checking my tutorial tune search engine: http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=000459911131320826227%3Apr71mpimhd0 to see what coverage your various candidate tunes have out there on the Internets. For example, there don't seem to be ...

Sean sa Ceo (John In The Fog) really takes advantage of this idea. It starts in the upper octave, drops down for the B part, and then goes up even higher in the second octave for the C part. Fabulous tune. Please don't try to hijack this thread by talking about the music. Please get back to esoteri...

That works for some things, but as you get into more detailed analysis you need to actually parse the ABC, which is a pain :-( For what you're doing, I'll bet. My current work (in Lisp) is pretty hacky. I just keep adding more to the parser as I run into or need to deal with new aspects of ABC. Or ...

Yes, exactly. Just treat the abc file as a text database, treat abc as a record format, then suck the tunes into a data structure or pick them apart with regular expressions. That works for some things, but as you get into more detailed analysis you need to actually parse the ABC, which is a pain :...

I think it would be kind of useful to get a frequency distribution for each note played in the ITM repertoire, from (G,) to (d,) to justify getting certain keys on the flute (low C, low C#, Eb, Fnat long, Fnat short, G#, Bb and Cnat) given that each of these keys can cost hundreds of dollars each. ...

So, in a random distribution you might expect that 35% of the tunes would begin in the second octave. The fact that it's actually 25% means that the tunes are only slightly weighted (by 10%) toward the 1st octave or below. That's interesting, although you take the fact that the high octave is under...

To answer your original question I can definitely hear the difference, and the second clip has the swing that I associate with hornpipes. However, I'm not sure that's the best hornpipe to use as a teaching example. A more common hornpipe would be better, and best would be one that works well in both...
