I haven't played the narrow bore pros yet (I just ordered an aluminum one). You'll love it! I'm with Azalin...my narrow bore aluminum has quickly become my favorite session/gig whistle. It can take some aggressive play, cuts very well without being obtrusive, and has an amazingly solid low end. Min...

Strange... Byll, Ridseard, I know the question was about brass vs alloy, but how come you don't comment--like btw--on the composites? I'm obviously not Byll or Ridseard, but have a Burke composite C that's very special in tone and playability. One of my very favorite whistles. As expected, a comple...

Love to hear your evaluation after yo've gotten them. Well, I received the whistles a couple days ago and have been putting them through their paces. All I can say is, what wonderful instruments. I was surprised at the volume of both, the aluminum narrow bore in particular. It's actually a bit loud...

I will never forget many years ago (actually, back in the late 70s) when I was touring as an opening act for several different groups and individual performers, I was flying back to Chicago from the east coast for a long overdue break. Unfortunately, it wasn't a direct flight and I had to change pla...

Will do. I'm looking forward to seeing how they do in our weekly gigs/sessions, as well as upcoming studio work.

Thanks for the responses

Appreciate all the input. I've listened to several audio clips, read what you've all had to say, and have ordered both the brass and aluminum narrow bores from Mike.

Ridseard, you said you own the brass pro session, brass nb, and al nb. I know it doesn't answer the original question, but can you compare the three of them (volume, tone, playable range, etc.)? I don't think I'm the only one that would be interested in hearing a comparison. Thanks. Yea....Same her...

When I saw the Chieftains in Nashville at the Ryman for the taping of "Down the Old Plank Road", Paddy used several whistles. The D was definitely a Sindt, and I believe he had a Bb Sindt. He also played what appeared to be a Burke Composite, and a couple others I couldn't tell what they w...

For those with both the narrow bore brass and aluminum D...

I'm considering both the Burke narrow bore brass and aluminum Ds right now, so this seems like a good thread to pick your brains. For those who own both, I'd be interested in getting your input with regard to tonal characteristic differences, volume, playability, etc. Can either hold its own in smal...

I just received a new Burke alumnium D. Very clean sound, nicely in tune, solid timbre and thus far no clogging. I'll use it on a recording tomorrow and put it through its full pacing. L.E. McCullough
L.E.,
Is that the session or narrow bore?

Burke AlPro D vs Al Narrow Bore D vs Brass Session D?

I've done some searches, but can't find any direct comparisons between these whistles, so would like to get some input from those who have played all three. I know the new brass session with black tip is Burke's best seller, but unfortunately, no one in our local Celtic circle has one that I know of...

That's pretty much the same version I found at the ABC Tunefinder, and very close to the way I heard it played at the festival. Thanks again.

Thanks, SteveK

Thanks........Yes, that's the tune and I was able to find the music on ABC Tunefinder once I had the name correct. I asked two people about it at the event and obviously misunderstood the name as Essex instead of Elzick's. There are some pretty thick accents over there! Anyway, thanks again. It's a ...
