Re: " Ask Pask ? " if only I could.

I have a nice 8key Pask, with ornate rings, for sale.
In the normal $ range for rare 8key flutes.
email me with an offer. Large holes, very Pratten-esque, huge embouchure hole.

Re: Rudall and Rose Boxwood Flute

thanks for that photo of my old boxwood Rudall, Kevin. #1900 was mine for a time, but it never really caught my fancy. In retrospect, I probably should have held onto it just for fun. I forget where I sold it. That 1980 would have been mildly different. But as the group notes, if it's not an intact ...

Re: Rudall & Rose on DoneDeal

must have restored the case as well. The original photo i have in the RudallRose Catalogue when it first sold shows the case to be mauled up a bit on the sides.

Recording shout-out

Shout out to Caoimhin O Fearghail and Paddy Tutty for a very very tasty self-titled recording of flute/fiddle that I've been quite enjoying of late. Gives me recollections of the Mulholland/Henry duet recording Tuned Up and the Jimmy Noonan recording of The Maple Leaf. Very accessible, easy listenin...

Re: Middlesex County Volunteer Fifes and Drums

yes, Chas.....i was. Long long time....and long long ago. lol Middlesex (as they are known) is an exceptional outfit that is, as far as I know, the only for-pay civilian group (other than the Old Guard F&D of the U.S. Army). They get very talented people to play, they march beautifully and look ...

Re: "Easiest" keyless flute for a beginner?

FWIW.....any student I have had who is brand new to the instrument, I begin them on not only the flute, but also the penny whistle. Depends on age and size of hands, too, whether it's a D, a Bb or otherwise. (whistle that is) The objective is to ensure there is some fun to be had from the learning p...

Re: why the long foot?

I'm going to quiz here on the assertion of third octave because something seems to elude me. Taken simply, the simple system flute for Irish trad music lives within the first two octaves, the following notes (not factoring the in-between accidents, just the whole tones). I'm relying on the lower-cas...

Re: R&R 3103 in G&H auction

What *is* pretty consistent is that very few untampered-with R&R embouchures are short of excellent to play, whatever their visible/measurable differences. Here here. There is no one style of cut. Some have sharper chimneys; others have very pitched ones requiring a focused lip. I have played o...

Re: why the long foot?

I got this personal (unsolicited) email from Pat Olwell, who then suggested to present here. I can't say as I entirely agree with it all, but my experience is only from the pure performance of this one example that, admittedly, seems to be an anomaly that is much to my lucky benefit, so for that I'm...

why the long foot?

For the makers: What is the advantage (and the reason) for making keyless flutes (and some keyed) with the long C-foot w/o the C keys? I have been playing an original boxwood Rudall&Rose with a short D foot.....and it's tremendous in pitch, tone and volume. The low E is strong and clearer and th...

Re: WTB Bb KEYED flute second hand (new or antique)

I've a Wilkes 6key that I might part with, blackwood, wide bands.

Or a keyless, slideless Olwell Bb if anyone is hunting for one.

Re: New Matt Molloy CD

I liked how he tries to replicate the original "black album" cover in the opposite direction (we should note that the original black album cover was with a flute with silver band.....and the controversy of that caused it to be airbrushed over to look like the flute you see now) https://ima...

Re: Flute for Research Purposes

left-hand excavations were not unheard of on Rudall&Rose flutes, the distinction of Nicholson flutes of Clementi and some (later) by Prowse. I have a very very early R&R (no serial number from the 7.Tavistock address) in which there is the left-hand excavation as well as a small indentation ...

Re: Rudall & Rose patent head flute in G&H auction

Regarding the serial number of the R&R in G&H's auction on 15th June. After manipulating the G&H photos and comparing the numerals in the photo of the serial number with the numerals in the serial number on my own R&R 4871 I am certain the serial number is 4147 , not 4417. you'd be ...
