Re: Squeeking like crazy.
Once humidity drops below 40% you can begin to get issues with the reed as it changes. under 30% and big changes can occur, those who get 10% and less will tell you horror stories of how not just cane but wood will crack..... Its an expensive lesson to learn sometimes !! I believe atmospheric pressu...

Re: Squeeking like crazy.
Its always best to make the diagnosis first, before proceeding to any treatment !! Measure humidity Check bridle appears in right position Assess aperture between the reed lips, are they closer than normal? Get a feel for whether the reed is easier than usual (commonly found when notes are hard to ...

Renewing a cork joint
Sadly the cork on my Olwell has perished at one joint and I want to replace it. Looks like 1 or 1.5mm thick cork. Its the joint nearest the tuning slide. Does anyone have experience of replacing cork on a joint? If so, you got any tips? (adhesive? cork thickness? do's and don'ts etc) Thanks in advan...

Re: I love my chanter... But
:o :o :o Chanter modification......Only after trying multiple good reeds and consistently getting a tuning problem..... One sure fire way to devalue a chanter is to modify it unnecessarily Reeds are the variable, not the chanter. And it seems unlikely that a chanter would have been made to play out ...

Re: Eliot Grasso.....too fast? or just not listening close enoug
Hi All Its great that pipers can all sound different. That's one of the best things about irish trad music. The Hag at the Churn version Eliot plays is from Seamus Ennis I think. I like how it is different to the more conventional "session" version we hear and play. Eliot was heavily influ...

Re: Playing in Sessions.
per last posting.....Going round the group taking turns to play pieces begins to sound more like a folk club than a session. :o I like the analogy given about joining a group of people you don't know who are having a conversation and appear to be already well-known to each other. You can't just walk...

Re: Playing faster, playing perfectly...
Yes One could get into all sorts of semantics and debate all sorts of variables (IQ and motor/spatial development and so on) I guess each individual in this world has a starting point and can progress from there The fact is that the vast majority of us underachieve and never reach our full potential...

I would refer those with an interest in this to "Bounce" by Matthew Syed.
He was a top level sportsman and is now a top level writer.
He explodes the talent myth.
Practice, rehearsal, hard work, persistence, method, determination, self-belief gives you talent !!

Lefties and the Irish Button Accordion
Just a curious thought (from a left hander who plays "right" handed uilleann pipes & flutes)
Do lefties switch the buttonbox around so their more dextrous hand has the melody notes and the right hand plays the base harmony notes??

Re: Which practice set?
Depending on what you mean by "north scotland" there could be a number of pipers near you, its always an idea to go see a real set and have a squeeze on them if allowed (the conversion from whistle to pipes = many years of work) Within 40 mins of Inverness there are at least 3 of us, for i...
