Re: Raising fingers too high? ( some conflicting advice)

Yes, I think relaxation is the key. If you play relaxed the fingers will naturally tend to the right distance from the hole. Yes, it's fine to raise fingers for strikes/rolls.

Was the Grinter heavy? I played one once long ago and recollect its weight. The key blocks are silver channeled, I recall.

Re: Beginner flute upgrade: Galeon or Copley?

Rt. The Copley delrin is easy to finger, the delrin slide is all you will ever need, it has good volume and tone. It's spot on every which way. I skipped the rings. The totally delrin flute looks elegant.

Re: four month old flute cracks

I had an Olwell pratten barrel crack about four months in. Called Patrick who told me they hadn't had a flute crack in two years. He was upset and accused me of 'flute abuse.' I sent him the flute and he found a flaw in the wood, which was responsible. They will replace the entire piece. Like me, yo...

Re: What is an Irish Flute (2) - Irish Flute vs Boehm Flute - Performance

The Boehm silver flute tends to be louder and to soar above the ensemble, which is part of the reason they were finally preferred in larger orchestras. The conical wooden flute, while it can be loud, is less loud, has a woodier sound and so tends to blend in--which makes it well suited to folk ensem...

Re: Lessons in my sleep

The dream has stayed with me and influenced my playing, especially of my Olwell Pratten. I've always tried to honk on it. Now I'm playing it gently, more sweetly, hitting the notes spot on. Hope the elves come back!

What is this whistle?

On the second half of this tune, John Sheahan is playing a D whistle. What is it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLYh6Pj_y30

Lessons in my sleep

I dreamed I was in Ireland on a rainy day. I stepped into a pub to get out of the rain. It was empty except for four musicians, sitting on wooden chairs, having a session. They looked to be about 12 years old. They were playing wooden flutes of a sort I've never seen. The music was quieter than what...

Re: FS: Olwell keyless Nicholson

I posted this also on the facebook page. An Olwell headjoint fits the Pratten, the Rudall, as well as the Nicholson. lt can readily fit any number of flutes (sometimes with a bit of thread or plumbers tape) and it makes them become (more) alive. I play not only the Nicholson and the Pratten but also...
