Re: New to the world of the tin whistle
I was going to suggest that silent way of playing the whistle. I've done it literally ten feet away from my sleeping wife and not awakened her. If you already read music, even just a bit, I'd strongly suggest working on that and ignoring TAB. If you learn to read music you'll have access to thousands...

Re: Fingering for G# on a D whistle
It would be well worth your time to learn to do half holing well. It IS possible. It would let you play Eb,Fnat,G#,Cnat etc all without having to remember all kinds of funky cross fingerings. Those don't always work on all whistles, but half holing always works.

Re: Any experience with low-cost but quality PVC whistles?
Yes, it is flat.. but it is in tune with itself. My plan was to do something like you suggested, but I still concluded I couldn't do it. I spent my early youth trying to learn to build and create things with my hands, until I realized that I'm just not able to do it well, to put it mildly. That's w...

Re: Repairing cork joints
Loren worked for one of the best recorder makers in the world. He knows wherein he speaks. Barge cement is terrific stuff. It's basically the rubber cement from hell. You'll find many other uses for it. Wrapping the joint in thread isn't a bad option if the cork and Barge doesn't work for you. You'll...

Re: Any experience with low-cost but quality PVC whistles?
I completely understand the OP - I have one of Guido's whistles, and it does play beautifully - unfortunately it's not tuned exactly to concert pitch, so in practice I can't use it. Therefore I looked into making one myself, following his plans and having the sample in my hands. I can't do it, it's...

Re: Tuning Preferences on the Burke
Play the whistle, not the tuner. That way lies madness. It's all too easy to blow notes flat or sharp. If the whistle sounds good to you and it's good with other instruments you play along with, that is what it all comes down to.

Re: Any experience with low-cost but quality PVC whistles?
If you want a really cheap low whistle, you could make one yourself from pvc pipe. I don't even bother with a mouthpiece but just make it like on a quena. Takes about 20 min. Cost: 2.50 € for 2m of pipe. But having said that. The Dixon one piece low D is really nice. Just feels a bit flimsy. Well, ...

I think one of those is a Water Weasel in low G. Someone buy it right away. I have one and it's one of the best whistles I've ever played, any maker, any key.

Re: Shipping cost - US to Finland
USPS.com has a price calculator for shipping anywhere in the world, with various options. I don't think a low whistle will fit in a priority mail flat rate box so you'll have to provide your own. The calculator asks the weight and dimensions of the package as well as its value. Ive used USPS to ship...

If I were a moderator, I'd let you post it on the classified section, but seriously you'd probably get more money on eBay.

How would you experienced players suggest the course of progression on learning. Thank you !!! :D Go to http://tinwhistler.com and click on ''tunes''. You can see and hear many tunes played. I agree-- Whistler's site is excellent. I count myself lucky that he's local enough to show up at one partic...

I came across this site by way of the banjo world, but much of this site's information really can be applied to any instrument,or even learning any other non-musical skill. More practice is not necessarily better if all you're really practicing your mistakes! This is highly worth reading: https://cl...

Re: Features liked for whistle storage
Pistol cases are great and fairly inexpensive. Note: whatever you get, make sure it's not airtight. You want any moisture in the whistle to be able to evaporate. A pistol case does not allow this, so when you get home with your whistles, open up the case to let them dry out. Mold or fungi can grow i...

Re: Begin playing tin whistle
Get a copy of Bill Ochs' book The Clarke Tin Whistle. There used to be a version in C I think, so make sure you get the one for D. Work through the book lesson by lesson, listening to the CD that comes with the book. It assumes you know nothing and starts with the very basics of reading music (MUCH ...
