Pipers grip on the right hand

I was wondering what people thought of playing the piper's grip on the right hand. I can't reach it on my Doyle flute as the stretch is too much. However, My teacher keeps telling me to do this. I don't want to have to tell my teacher again that I don't want to do it. And I do not wish to waste any...

Any tunes I know is from having played trad. music on other instruments. I know a few polkas (rhythmically, polkas are more feasible). I know "O the britches etc." I'm sure I could play some others, I still need to familiarise myself with the instrument. Will keep u posted. Thanks you Big ...

When Choosing, take your time...seriously

I am very happy with my Doyle flute. Note, this is important...If I had taken my time, I'd have chosen a flute for smaller hands, or a three-piece flute with smaller bores (holes in flute) The three-piece flute can be turned to adapt to hand size as the instruments was made to be more adaptable to b...

FKWS replies

To answer your questions, Harry Bradley, Conor Byrne, Marcus O Murchu and Tara Diamond were teaching flute there. Unfortunately, I was not at the Flute blow-out as my partner was unwell at the time. But, I was at an archive programme run by Ionad Cois Locha on the previous day (Dunlewey Centre, Done...

Martin Doyle flute.

I am playing on a Martin Doyle flute. It has a rich "big" tone on the low notes. Is that what you are looking for? If the low notes are loud, the 2nd octave is harder to blow. Still he gets top marks for afordability and service. I tried a Sam Murray flute at his workshop in Galway. Lovely...

FKWS 2005-06 was great!

I have just returned FKWS. I am playing much better on the flute now. My tone has really come on and I am really chuffed about that. The standard of teaching is really high. The scenery is magic. Bunbeg is great for sessions and I stayed in Screag an Iolair hostel so I played there as well. I will b...

I believe the round embouchure allows greater freedom (variety) in how one holds the flute without it affecting the attack.
This is interesting, could you explain what you mean by "attack"? Thank you.

How to get started on the fiddle

I would really appreciate some serious replies to this question re. how to get started on the fiddle. I would like to know what you did to get started.

I would be interested to know what exercises to practise. (obviously scales ). I have a few simple tunes off already.

Thanks.

Thanks for your advice. Yes, I bought an African Blackwood keyless Martin Doyle D flute. It plays very nicely. It is a good bit lighter than the Murray and has a woody sound from it. Cathy W It also has a big sound off it [which isn't eveyone 's cup of tea.] I will keep you posted as I've only start...

On the radiator

Try the Alexander technique for posture. I sit up "dead straight" (and I "horse" [blow] down my flute if it's cold.). I have what is known as a "posh" posture...my posture is aligned and relaxed. I don't know if that makes any sense. I used to know someone who pla...

FIFE!!!!

I didn't know that a fife was more difficult than a wooden flute... How much of a difference would it make? Enough for me to improve my tone and thus play quicker? [I 've always been curious about fifes having seen them in N. Ireland and at parade marches in Dublin occasionally.] I really do need to...
