Re: Do whistles wear out?
Good grief, what could they be doing to those whistles?!? For the record, while I suspect it is possible for bits to wear out given enough time (not to mention cracks forming, etc), my main whistles are all at least 16 years old at this point and still play like they are new. Edited to add: If you l...

Re: whistle prominent in movie
I dunno if this has been mentioned before, and it's impossible to search on the movie title for obvious reasons. Last night I watched M, the remake from 1951. I thought I'd seen it before, but obviously not. A whistle first appears about 40 minutes in. [I'd thought it was a Cooperman's but it was a...

Re: WARBL arrives
Mine came yesterday too. We've got company so I haven't had much time to play with it, but I plugged it into my Mac, and once I figured out I could run the WARBL configuration in a Chrome Window I was off and running. (Think it's just sending the notes to the Garage Band instance I already had runni...

Re: Peg/Peig McGrath Recordings
Sorry, for some reason I thought that everyone knew that Peg's Cherish the Ladies album was up on Amazon digital (at least in the US): Cherish the Ladies. Only $6, so a bit more expensive than Mr Gumby's find, but doesn't require stepping away from your computer to get it!

Re: Kenny's flute recordings
Yes, that's me. I had lots of help with the names (as I see kenny already said), mind you, my big contribution was having the idea and writing a bit of software to help make the list visible from multiple views. (I should get around to making fancy HTML output someday too, but the text stuff kenny l...

Re: Peg/Peig McGrath Recordings
There's a track of her playing with Josie on Flute Players of Roscommon Volume 2.
She's also one of the two flute players on "The Coleman Ceili Band on American Tour" LP. Don't think she has any solo stuff there, though.

Colleen Shanks playing Karavaev high C# whistle
Colleen Shanks playing Karavaev high E whistle
Edited to add: I haven't had a chance to play a Karavaev whistle of any sort, but I trust Colleen's judgment, and these videos definitely caught my attention.

Re: Pat O'Riordan has died.
I shared the news on Monday...I find it hard to see how any of the information was incorrect... :-? Regardless...it is silly to debate such things in the overall picture...R.I.P Mr. O'Riordan I believe tldawkins is referring to once or twice years ago when Pat's death was incorrectly reported on th...

Re: Whistle Tunes from Other Traditions Beyond ITM?
Here's some Newfoundland traditional music played on whistle by Gerry Strong. This is a set of "doubles" from the playing of fiddler Rufus Guinchard. (Normally they'd be repeated a few times before switching to the next tune -- Gerry seems to have wanted to make a quick demo here!) Gerry h...

Re: Maid of Mt Kisco tune structure
Just checked From Ballymote to Brooklyn, and I can confirm Killoran played it with the standard short middle section in that recording. (Web search suggests there might have been another Killoran recording of the tune I don't have access to.)

Re: Maid of Mt Kisco tune structure
There are a fair number of tunes that mix 8 bar repeat and 4 bar repeat parts, and they were more common in the old days -- a lot of people today tend to double the shorter parts of many of these tunes so they are "normal". "Maid of Mt Kisco" is the only one I know of with that p...

Re: Sheet music recommendations
I might say that as long as you're staying in a single hymnal you're good, but that's not the case, because the same tune might be used for two, three, or four different hymns in the same hymnal. If my memory serves me correctly, there are also at least a couple of hymns in the (1980s) Methodist hy...

Re: Opinions on Lessons
I understand this is the way ITM operates, and one should develop a quick ear and the ability to change tunes as needed , but if you come as beginner it's frustrating. A teacher would give you an authoritative version to learn and build off of, but having multiple versions as a beginner just adds f...
