The reason to have a (low) F whistle is because they are insanely cool. The only "practical" purpose I've run into is to play along with other people who have realized this, like Mike McGoldrick, Lunasa, and Flook. For instance, on Lunasa Otherworld, tracks 1, 5, and 9 are on low F ...

John -- don't worry about using the half-hole fingering. My impression is that many (if not most) Irish musicians use it exclusively. Mind you, I don't have any idea how they do a quick switch to D and back. I normally use oxx oxx, which makes that easy... (I've been working on learning the half-hol...

I keep on thinking someone should invent something for cleaning out the windway of whistle mouthpieces. Like a small piece of silk tied to something that will let you easily thread it through....

Once you start learning tunes by ear in session (or from session tapes), it's hopeless. I'm lucky if I have names for half of the polkas I know. Lot's of times there's just no good oppertunity to learn what the name is. You'll find most professional Irish musicians are terrible with names. For insta...

Tom, I didn't even think of Colm until I saw your vote. I love that CD, but think of it as a flute and vocal CD, despite the great whistling tracks. Loretto is a very different kettle of fish. Celtic Mettle is definitely not pure drop, and most of her whistle solos on it are her own compositi...

I think it depends on the whistle. I can slur cleanly with just breath pressure on the evil Sweettone C that happened to be laying near the computer when I read your message. (Stupid whistle had to be good for something, I guess.) It's dicey on my O'Riordan D (A to high G slur works okay), and just ...

Heck, I've hung out and helped Glenn sell whistles on occasion, and I've never even seen a Wooden Low F. The Wooden Low Gs I've tried have been amazing. I've got Water Weasel Low F, though, and it's a very nice whistle. (Though Kevin Crawford didn't agree. ) Takes big hands to play it...
