Re: The Finishing of Low Whistle Holes

Well, I think scalloped is a pretty good word to describe what Phil did on his Chieftain V4, whether or not it is a technical term. The soft edges seem to guide your fingers to the hole, are very comfortable, and may help with half-holing and the sliding of notes too, from my experience. But what at...

Re: FS: Burns Folk Flute, a little bit different.

Ah, so there are now three versions of the Folk Flute! I just went to Casey's page for clarification, and there it is in black and white; Small handed, regular, and large-holed. Not to mention, ergonomic or in-line holes. http://caseyburnsflutes.com/ff.php They have always been great flutes for the ...

Re: FS: Burns Folk Flute, a little bit different.

A little bit different, because of adding an endcap? Or because you are listing it as a large holed version?

I thought the large holes were standard on the Folk Flute, other than the small handed version.

Re: Shipping a Chieftain to the UK to be recorked

It does seem a very high price just for a low whistle going back to the UK. Sometimes breaking down the whistle helps (for long ones, like Low D's), as it is usually cheaper to send a smaller package. There are usually a few choices to make in delivery time, and the longer times are less expensive, ...

Re: Sore throat after practising the low whistle

Just a couple of quick thoughts-are you in a dry climate, or is it possible you are having post nasal drip (sinus or allergy problems)? The sinus problem could easily give you a sore throat. I doubt it is the whistle that is causing your issue with the low whistle. Let us know how it turns out for y...

Re: 2 questions

it takes practice to build up your muscles and find a comfortable position. I'm pretty sure just holding up your arms in a flute gripping position Afraid you're probably *gripping* too hard if you need to build up your muscles to hold the flute... Sure, it takes time to develop the chops for your e...

Re: Bass whistle mania?

Yeah wow, big whistle, and even bigger pictures! I think you need to resize some of them for forum use-they are gigantic. A fair point. I was pretty lazy yesterday. I've scaled them down some today and edited my post. Your Shearwater is a very good value, that's for sure. But that angle of y...

Re: Bass whistle mania?

Yeah wow, big whistle, and even bigger pictures! I think you need to resize some of them for forum use-they are gigantic. I have an older Low B Chieftain that I like a lot. Not a hard finger stretch, and not much breath needed-well, much less than you would think it would take. It has a great...

Re: Low-D-mania

Everyone has whistles that they relate to best, and everyone is different. So, the best way to find out what you like best, is to buy and play them for a while-sometimes it takes much more time with a whistle to learn how to play it best. It's the only way to really tell for sure what works for you,...

Re: Bare aluminum MK Pro

Very interesting, David! Yes, it does defy logic, but I'm glad it works otherwise for you. I also wipe my whistles down after playing too, so I imagine that does help, along with washing my hands often so no oil builds up. Though thinking back, even with my high polished brass Low D whistles I've ha...

Re: first Low D Whistle: too breathy?

It all depends on your experiences with Low D's and pleasing your ears along the way. I have liked some purer tone whistles, but for the most part I really prefer those that have a lot of character to the tone. All are a bit different, so it's all a matter of trying and finding what pleases you most...

Nice review and comparison, as usual (your other helpful reviews too), Richard! No doubt it will help many in their search for a Low D, or other low whistle. It's always good to inspire others on their journeys. It sounds like your Colin Goldie will give a lot of pleasure along the way, and congrats...

Nice comparison Richard in the other thread in which you posted, and thanks for all the effort and thought about these three, and the others you've reviewed before. I very much like and am intrigued by your description of the MK having a gravelly yet focused tone. Of course, that is no doubt how you...

Re: Bare aluminum MK Pro

Yes, nice job on that polishing and re-contouring, it looks great. I would think it might be still a little slippery though, with that high a polish on it. It probably is near what it was like before it was anodized. The most practical (and handsome too) finish I've seen on a low whistle, was from M...
