Re: Sightreading and piping
I'm sorry if I got cranky. I just hear it over and over again, and I find the notion oversimplified and a little insulting. To me it implies traditional music is a shower of ignorant if charming folk, and history shows us that some pretty darned sophisticated musicians have been transcribing, writin...

Re: Sightreading and piping
With Leo Rowsome and Seamus Ennis as teachers, I would be very surprised if Mr. O'Flynn didn't read. And then there's that little piece called "The Brendan Voyage" ... plus a bunch of other Shaun Davey work. Oh, and those film scores. And those recording sessions with like, Kate Bush, Mark...

And probably to the session as well!misterpatrick wrote:
I did have a nice experience last week at a session where I played a couple hornpipes only accompanied by a harpist. Added a really nice element to the tune.

... And, OAIM is a fine choice. Mikie Smyth is a great player and teacher.

Re: Stumped....Gan Ainm
I'm still stumped, but I'm going to venture that it's Cape Breton in origin; perhaps by one of the Beatons?

Re: Are there tunes you will not play anymore?
I try to maintain a benign continence until its over. Beats benign incontinence, I guess. ;-) I'm trying to learn to let go, especially when I'm not adding to the general quality. It's hard! Especially when I sit there and am reminded that often, the music does just fine without me ... many times I...

Re: Most difficult tune you've learned
Now that I think about it, the tune with the most disproportionate ratio of time invested practicing:potential for screwup for me is, of all things, The Humors of Tulla.
I have been gnawing on that one for years, and still wreck it more often than not.

They're probably sold at garage sales and then find new homes on theme-pub walls!

Re: Are there tunes you will not play anymore?
I hear you. Aaaand .... I still remember an entire theaterfull of Irish musicians being knocked over when Paddy Keenan opened his solo set with the Kesh (ala Bothy Band) at Swannanoa some years back. There was an audible gasp as we all "got" how great that tune can be. I still can't tell y...

Re: Are there tunes you will not play anymore?
I have to put Cooley's at the top of my "AGGGGGGHHHH!" list, and MBTB and Sally Gardens aren't far behind. In part, I think because they do get pretty rough treatment in sessions. Everyone goes "woot" and piles on, and unmusical mayhem ensues. I usually adopt the Liz Carroll appr...
