Re: When you can't sleep...

If I had nothing to do the next day I'd probably put in earphones and go round tidying the house, or sit and watch a movie if I was feeling lazy. To get to sleep I usually listen to audiobooks, spoken word not dramatised. As long as I know the story it sends me to sleep rather than keeping me awake....

Re: Flook Calling it a Day

After 13 years I'm not suprised. I think they'll take a couple of years break and then do a few gigs, but they've all got family & friends who miss them and touring is tough.

Re: Is there something wrong with a 100% self-taught violinist?

Do you ever play with other people? If so, do they ever remark on unusual technique, or maybe ask whey all your notes are different from everyone else's in pitch and length? As Wildman says, you probably aren't learning in a complete vacuum, you've got the basics already from your $80 lessons (that ...

Haven't seen any American Robins this year, but European Robins are cuter anyway.

Re: A Question for the Scientifically Versed.

In their application on the outside of spaceships hurtling through the upper atmosphere it is not the function of the tiles to heat to the core. Were this to be the case the heat gained (from friction) would dissipate both ways, both back into space and also, fatally, into the ship. The whole point...

Why if the screen broke "after a few months" are you only just now trying to claim on your warranty when the year's warranty is nearly up? Have you not been using it? I don't see why they should need your credit card number, ask to speak to a supervisor. Even had you bought it on a credit ...

Have a Chillin' Winterfest '08

Anybody want to buy a t-shirt or baseball cap with this motto? $9.99 each, but bulk* discounts available. I had 1,000 of each printed up in a cynical attempt** to cash in on a Politically Correct Winter Seasonal Holiday Period, and I've still got 983 of each*** to shift before 01/01/09 The wording i...

Re: International flying

Izzy, contact the airline and ask. Our flight to Houston was cancelled (but not the flight back!) which I discovered by chance last week. An email to the airline sorted it out, and they reinstated it. They have, however, ignored my email asking how half of a flight could be "cancelled in error...

Re: A Question for the Scientifically Versed.

I think one possible source of Emm's lad's confusion is that although aluminium IS a good heat conductor like most metals, it's not as good as some, like gold or copper. Some aluminium pots & pans have a copper disk in the bottom, but covered over so it doesn't get in contact with the food. This...

Re: Flashlight batterys at low tempratures.

I can't imagine living in a place so warm that you weren't aware that batteries don't have much power in the cold! :o Ditto. London isn't known for being particularly cold, but even here we know that a battery that apparently has zero charge can be eked out a bit by gentle warming in a hand or pock...

That had me confused for quite a while. In England a widow is a woman whose husband has died, a widower is a man whose wife has died. Beth tells me in the US there's no differentiation except through context.

Re: Revolutionary new breakthrough!

We knew it was getting near Christmas when we saw ads for three new battery-powered kitchen devices to clutter up your drawers with, an electric can opener, an electric jar opener, and something else electric that I forget what it opened. Milk and juice cartons probably. Granted if you have poor han...
