Re: Tuning Question

The first time I had heard and seen the "sharp C natural" it really jumped out at me. I believe that I have heard only one piper using it. Vol XXV No 1 - Winter 2006 issue of The Pipers’ Review, or Iris na bPíobairí, has a good article on the tuning of the uilleann bagpipes. "The Tuni...

Re: looking for sheet music for 'ace and deuce of piping' CRAN

I hate it when a guitar player will tell me a tune is in A Minor when it is actually A Dorian. I use a C whistle/chanter for A Minor and a D whistle/chanter for A Dorian. :boggle:

Re: Tuning Question

You can always use a MIDI program to simulate the drones, and there is an IPOD app that will simulate drones and regs.

Re: Tuning Question

I tune the chanter notes to the drones. Some folks tune to A=440. I tune the drones using either an electronic pitch pipe or a tuning fork. You can use an electronic tuner, but you either have to know the cents different between JI and ET or the tuner might have a Just Intonation setting. There are ...

Uilleann bagpipe essay by Michael C. Scully

Long ago (1994?), I had found an essay on what is so hard about playing the uilleann bagpipes. I think it was on the defunct bagpipes newsgroup with the subj: U.P. Essay (Long). I lost some of it when a free website server that I was using went under. If anyone happens to have a copy of this, I woul...

Re: a couple of questions about technique

If it's Patsy Touhey you are asking about, his recordings are from a tape I got from NPU, I believe.

Re: a couple of questions about technique

[Keltia Musique KMCD18 m303 (2 disc set)] I think Paddy Keenan's playing on these two cuts closely resemble Patsy Touhy's versions. havent heard em...yet...got a cd title to share? :) It's Keltia Musique KMCD18 m303 (2 disc set), two cuts each of several different types of bagpipes. I think I bough...

Re: a couple of questions about technique

in 1989 or 1990, Paddy Keenan did a festival of diverse bagpipes in Brittany. there was a CD issued (incl. Fred Morrison, JP VanHees, JC Maillaird, Vicenzo Calamita, Sepp Pichler, Carlos Nunez, Christian Vesvre, Patrick Molard, Jorj Bothua, Pascal Guingo, etc etc etc, truly a stellar pan-Euro lineu...

Re: Back D to Bottom D

I like to adjust my reed so that back D and hard D (achieved with an A cut) take the same pressure.

I used a tupperware container that I found in the grocery store that fit my mainstock with just a little wrapping with some linen thread.

Re: Reed Question

I scrape some from the top of the U or V shape toward the lips, avoiding the last 1/8" or so at the lips.

The notes I took at my reedmaking classes say that the behavior of the E and octave E is determined there and the tuning of the E lives in the area just above the staple eye.
