Re: Humidifying flutes

it's the extremes we have to guard against, and a good case and regular playing does most of that for you. Yes, i was wondering about that as well. My flute spends the majority of time with me in it's cavallaro zippered case which, in the winter, i keep in a plastic bag. I feel that this is the mos...

Re: Humidifying flutes

I still think too-much humidity is less of a problem for flutes than not-enough air circulation. Tenon thread might need to be reduced (cork should, theoretically, adapt), and taking them apart during storage is important (especially with boxwood). But, after all, when we play our flutes, often for ...

Re: Humidifying flutes

Also, FWIW, I think most instruments can handle a fair amount of wiggle-room regarding humidity and tempuratures; it's usually sudden extremes that make a difference. A few degrees can make a bit of a difference in humidity levels, but if it's truly cold out and you're heated really at all, you'll h...

Re: Humidifying flutes

Peter is absolutely right that air circulation is the bigger issue, That too though can be tricky. A classic situation in the West of Ireland is that you see the humidity in the house go towards the eighties, you open the windows to air the place and within 30 minutes you return to see the hygromet...

Re: Humidifying flutes

Keep in mind that humidity levels that are good for flutes - in the 50-60% range - are also good for humans, plants, etc. If your house is too dry for your flutes, there's a likelihood it's also too dry for you; your skin, lungs, nasal membranes, etc. So, if you over-heat your homes during a dry win...

Re: Humidifying flutes

Wow! Solid construction. I didn't even know that there were such big boxes. How humid is it down there? And top. Do I see two cups of water and one with spunge? Good job! Thanks for posting! Roughly the same size as my apartment. Fortunately, washing dishes brings the humidity right up, so I just l...

Re: Should a flute player double on penny whistle?

I miss my old maple Moeck *sigh* Actually, i prefer the recorder to the penny whistle myself. do any of the wooden whistles out there have the same qualities (deep woody sound, playability) that make the recorder so lovely? You recorder players know what i am talking about - where a soft breath giv...

Re: FS: B&S Dulcet 8-key Concert Flute (Late C19th)

Great clip, Jem - love to hear a familiar tune played so well.

Hope you sell this flute soon - way too tempting, but sadly - though fairly priced - out of my range.

Re: Should a flute player double on penny whistle?

It's funny, but I do agree with MT Guru's comment that most flute players (self-identifiers as primarily fluters) sound like flute players playing whistle. The same is true in reverse. While similar, there is just a slightly different approach to the two instruments. Eric Let's say we agree on this...

Re: Should a flute player double on penny whistle?

I wonder what specific reasons Hammy and Jack Coen had against the idea. I didn't get the feeling Jack was so much against it, but he did tell me once that too much time spent on the whistle instead of flute adversely affected one's embouchure. Passing comment, really, so I was surprised to hear th...

Re: I keep reading posts about how you only need 6 holes...

I consider myself a flute player Ok not dumb - if you think you are a flute player while saying that Brian Finnegan isn't then you're deluded and must have a screw loose. You know, whatever. I can understand people not getting my point, as it is one way of seeing things that isn't standard. But I n...

Re: 4-key flutes, chromatics

I guess one's mileage varies... personally find the G# easier than a fudged Bb. Most useless key to me is the C; disappointed, then, that the Grinter has a C in its 4 key setup, and not a Bb . For a potential 5th key, I'd much prefer a long F to compliment the short F, but everyone's tastes and pref...

Re: Origin of glottal stops?

IMO, glottals had nothing whatsoever to do with good or bad flutes and their availability. A bad flute will have trouble articulating, regardless of the technique used, and glottals aren't anymore obvious or easily accomplished compromise than tonguing. Both work, to slightly differing effects, and ...

Re: love the one you're with

I'm with Gordon...it seems like people find "the" flute at about the point they're finally, truly comfortable with playing flute. That generalization doesn't work in my case. I found what I wanted when I knew enough about what I wanted out of an instrument that I could make an appropriate...
